Why the Aldi hate?

Ronin1069Why the Aldi hate?
I’ve been shopping at Aldi for years, you can’t find everything but you can find most things. Literally cut my grocery bill in half from what it used to be when I shopped at cub foods or another big box grocery.
I’m hosting a barbecue tomorrow, and apparently there’s been side conversations about the fact that I am grilling Aldi steaks, kind of pisses me off.
I’ve been grilling Aldi ribeyes for years, I think they’re actually pretty tasty.
Have you guys shopped at Aldi?

WaterburyBobI haven't shopped at Aldi's myself because it's too far, but my in-laws shopped there for many years.
I've never heard anything bad about them or their products.

bigwagonWe shop there all the time. They are very good for some things, marginal for others, like most grocery chains.

ensigmaticMy wife shops there often. Like

MboromanMy wife and I shop at Aldi as much as possible. My wife will make out a list and go to Aldi first. Whatever is left, she gets at Publix. For staples such as bread, cheese, cereal, canned goods, etc., they have some fantastic prices. At Publix, a large box of Honey Nut Cheerios is nearly $7. At Aldi, I get the same thing in their Millville brand for $2.19!
The best part is that they are building one right near our house and it should be open sometime this Summer. That will save about 20 miles of round-trip driving. Our Publix is about half a mile from us in one direction and the Aldi will be about half a mile in the other direction. We can't wait!

thumperfbcI'm guessing Aldi is a more "value-oriented" grocery? We don't have that chain in my area...
But we do have the "lower end" stores, including a local chain called Cost-Less Foods. I get most of meat and a solid chunk of my fresh produce from there. There beef is consistently better, and cheaper, than other options.
It isn't always about price.

Pale HorseI’m late to the Aldi love but I do love it. If others don’t like what you are cooking they are free to not eat it.

RogueJSKI'm a fan of Aldi, although not quite as much as a few years ago.
Pre 2021ish, Aldi's prices made it a smoking deal. It would literally be 1/3 the price to shop my basic groceries at Aldi compared to another grocery chain.
But it seems like Aldi got hit hard with the post-pandemic inflation over the past couple years. Now, many of their items are the same price - or higher - than the bigger grocery chains like Walmart.
I still like going there, since they tend to have interesting stuff each week that other grocery chains don't carry, often including German food that I like, but it's not as much of a cost savings as it used to be.
Previously, I would shop at Aldi 2-3 times as much as a larger grocery store like Walmart. But now it's reversed, with me going to Aldi only about every third or fourth grocery trip.
I will say that I have personally found Aldi's beef and pork to be hit-or-miss, being less consistent in quality than other grocery chains, and as a result I tend to not buy those particular meats from Aldi. But I certainly wouldn't stoop to denigrating my hosts' choice of meat if invited to dinner.

smschulzI must have missed the Aldi hate memo.

LeemurUh, wife was giddy when they opened one in town here. We love it.

shovelheadI go there for the quality and product availability first and pricing secondary. I have a Kroger, a Wal-Mart, a Meijer and a Spartan store all within four miles of home.
I will admit that when Aldi first opened I was not impressed but within the last five years they have changed for the better.
Let the haters hate.

ridewvI like Aldi and shop there pretty often. I especially take advantage of their vegetables which are almost always fresh and inexpensive. Wine too. I haven't tried their meat simply because I buy that from a butcher locally but I'm sure it's good.

DzozerVery strange to hear this - their meat is good, never heard a bad thing about it from anyone else either. Aldi is related to Trader Joe's - another quality store IMO.
Are Aldi and Trader Joe’s the Same Company?

selogicThey are building one about 20 minutes from my house . I guess I'll see what it's all about .

OgieAldi=Good. Their German chocolates=Great!

casAldi is like Lidl, mostly packaged stuff. I shop at Lidl... a little, because it's close. But there's only like the same half dozen things I buy there.
May 26, 2023, 07:47 PM
Skins2881I won't shop there just because it smells bad in their stores.

It’s definitely worth a look. Bring a quarter for the shopping cart.
