We just adopted this beautiful 2yo GSD from our local rescue/shelter. The wife named him Boris. His temperament is wonderful, and in less than a week he has learned to ignore the rabbit, who also has free run of the house/yard.
 
Next to Boris is our Irish Wolfhound, and they have become best of friends, romping/playing in the yard. I introduced the Wolfhound here two years ago as a puppy, and she has now grown to full size. She is about 3" taller than Boris, but they each weigh 100lbs. The pair make an excellent guard crew, both with deep loud barks at strangers.

Great looking dogs...

Have to tell a true joke...

we lost a dog just over a year ago and my wife is finally ready for a 'new' one...We currently have just one 12 year old hound dog. So, we look at the local shelter's web sight and they have a 9 year old female hound that has just been brought in... and she has some health problems... my wife calls and gets the whole run down and list it to me and I say it sounds like more than we can handle and she tells me that we are picking the dog up in two days... she looks at me and our dog then pats me on the shoulder and says, "looks like my new job is taking care of old dogs.."

Congrats on the newest addition to the household. Dogs truly are part of the family.

I watched a news story about a dog trainer that focused specifically in snake training
.
It took him five sessions to train dogs about rattle snakes and how they should stay way back.

Are rattlers a concern up by you ?

Yeah, we have a 7 year old shepherd. She sheds like crazy, slight pest at times, helped with long walks. Besides that, while not an attack dog, but one can’t ignore her if a stranger.

Beautiful pair as mentioned. What was his name? we kept the name of ou 1-1/2 yo healer mix. But we liked it.
He looks older than two. Did you get papers on him or is that the shelter estimate. Just curious. Glad he fit right in. They can sense a good home.

Only the Mojaves Seriously, we seem to be in a niche environment area where the Mojaves are prevalent, whereas Western Diamondbacks are the most common in AZ. I see 8-10 Mojaves for every WD in our neighborhood.
 
I have serious reservations about using an e-collar for rattlesnake aversion training. The correct way to use the e-collor is to put it on at least an hour before the first correction, and leave it on at least an hour after the last correction. Otherwise, the dog becomes "collar aware".
 
I took the time when we built here in 2002 to make the "dog area" (the fenced in part) completely free of rodent habitat. No bushes for them to burrow under, etc., and it has worked very well over time. Remove the food source, and the snakes stay away.
