Our 4 year old lab will get a limp for a day or two after extended hard runs. She is fine while running but after laying down she is a little gimpy with one leg. Doesn't seem to happen under normal play time 10 or 15 minutes at a time.

Anyone have any luck with the various dog joint supplements?

Liquid-Vet K9 Hip & Joint Support Formula has helped our basset hound to move more easily and without pain. It's from family business in the USA as well.

Whatever you opt to use, most require a long time to build up in your dog's system to show benefits, so get him on it asap.

Chewy.com offers dog aspirin and other products. We also get Cosequin at Costco and give daily.

Is your lab extra well loved, voluptuous shall we say (they are a walking garbage can/food processor)? Make sure you keep that weight under control...we use 'healthy weight' dog food that helps keep ours from getting too tubby.

And FWIW, our choco lab just turn 13 on the odogometer and had a check-up and the vet thought the ol' man was doing pretty good for his age. He's still like a perpetual 18 month old toddler with his toys...

My GSD absolutely loved her daily walks. When she got to be a few years old her hips started deteriorating, to the point that I could hear them clicking when she walked. After talking to her vet I started her on a Glucosamine supplement and in about 3 months the clicking started to fade and she was walking easier. In 6 months it was completely gone.

My younger guy - part pit and part bull mastiff - is the same as your girl. After he's been laying down for a while he's a little gimpy when he gets up. After he starts moving around and playing he loosens up and you don't see the limp anymore. The vet recommended (other than that he lose some weight) a twice daily Carprofen, which is a canine version of Ibuprofen except you can give it to them on an ongoing basis where Ibuprofen shouldn't be taken all the time. It is a prescription med so you'd need to talk to your vet about it.

I also give him and his older brother one or two Dasuquin chews every morning. It's a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement for joints. Seems to help, or at least keep things from getting worse.

An older dog with arthritis we had I gave glucosamine, to be honest I'm not sure if id did anything and your 4 year old dog shouldn't have arthritis.

My 8 year old dog started exhibiting just what your is, getting down off the couch she would limp for a bit but once she got going the limp went away and she ran just like she always did. When I had her to the vet for a vaccine he felt her knee and felt a slight swelling thinking it could be arthritis or a slight tear. A couple weeks later when she was playing and running really hard in a circle she yelped and from then on walked on 3 legs with her right rear up. Vet said it was likely a torn ACL (actually it's called something different in dogs but it functions the same). So an operation was performed last week, he said it was probably partially torn prior then tore completely. He attached it back together somehow saying it'll be weeks before she'll try using it again.
I would suggest having a vet look at your dog and also run a blood test for Lyme, which can settle in leg joints. It can also cause kidney failure.

I have been using this with my 10 year old Lab Rylee. She is still pretty spry but I am careful to not overtax her.

Some years ago we used Deramzx for our arthritic GSD. It ran $100/month but gave us 3 more good years with her.

You will need a prescription.

My Belgian Sheepdog is 15 years old and has had arthritis in his hips for a few years now. He has difficulty in getting up. I give him two Cosequin tablets with MSM per day, two carprofen, and two gabapentin per day. He also gets fish oil. He is doing okay. He does not seem to be in pain and enjoys going outside and being around us. He does sleep a lot but hey, when I'm 105 years old I will probably sleep a lot too.

This is what is in the back of my mind. I hope not. I will give her a day or two and see how she does before calling the vet. It just started last night. Hopefully a day of rest will calm it down.

She is a good weight so I don't believe that is weighing on her. Partly because she loves getting out and running.

My 9 year old Pit is on aspirin twice a week.
I get my food from Chewy and they had an aspirin made for dogs and horses. Best purchase I've made for him.

We have 2, 12 year old Labs. Our boy is on Novox, which really helps with his arthritis.

We also give him CBD's. Do they work? We've missed a dose a couple of times and we could see the difference pretty quickly.

Hopefully Dr. Slabsides will see this thread.

The first thing I'd do i see a Vet for a full exam to figure out what the issue is.

This is the stuff we use for all four of our dogs. They’re all young and don’t need it yet, but it helped our older boxers the last couple of years of their lives. Three of the four dogs are bulldog varieties so we feel it’s better to be safe than sorry. It was recommended to us by our feed store owner, and she is way more knowledgeable on dog & cat nutrition than I ever could even imagine.

RideWV recommended a Lyme test - please do this. My blue tick/pointer mix had similar symptoms when she was 5. The good news was that Lyme is very treatable in canines and at 12 she is still active and relatively pain free.

Hopefully just an exertion issue - in which case there are numerous canine supplements that can alleviate the issue(s).

Good luck.
