VIZIO E550i-B2 55-Inch 1080p Smart LED HDTV (2014 Model) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G...cp_tai_icfWzbJT8KGE0

About 3 years old. Sound, but no video.
What do I want to replace it with?
Comparable in size and tech.
I'm not a huge tv watcher. Everything I watch is either Netflix or Amazon prime. Sometimes I used it for pandora. I'd rent movies from Vudu every once in a while.
Can I get this done for less than a grand?
I haven't even started to look yet....

Sony!!!!
Certainly can get a 55" Sony for under a grand.
I have a Visio, Samsung, and Sony.
Sony has by far the best picture when it comes to live action real actor stuff. Which is what I watch most computer generated video games and animation the Samsung shines.

Vizio is just OK it is the bedroom TV which I have the color, brightness, and contrast pretty dark so it is not bright at night when trying to sleep so I not too worried about picture quality for that.

I've been very happy with our LG TV and monitor. Both are around 5 yrs old and going strong. I'd buy the brand again.

You probably can look up Youtube and find a way to fix it by replacing the x or the y or the power board

The panels for Vizio TV's are made by AMTran. Vizio's are about middle of the road quality wise.

It is probably the main board or the controller board if the light source didn't fail.

I am a fan of Samsung. My last tv lasted me 9 years, of which it was on more then 16 hours everyday.

The tv in my house serves as background noise. It gets turned on in the morning and off when the last person goes to bed.

You should definitely be able to replace a 55" tv for under $1k with one that has better features.

AVSforums is a great resource for technical help comparing sets and getting a new one setup.

I picked up a 70" LG 4k set last November from Costco for under $1k delivered with a 4 year warranty. It's been nothing short of amazing once the picture was dialed in.

Cheers~

My mom's Vizio went out and for grins I took the back off. On the power board was 3 capacitors that had bulged. For $10 I replaced them and it works.

I had a friend that worked the return desk at Costco. I asked him what TVs came back the most. He said Vizio by a big margin.

My Daughter has a 65" Samsung curved 4K fed by a Yamaha 1050 receiver. It is absolutely stunning with live sports..........especially the Packers.

They're on directv.

I'll concur with Sony. Had a VIZIO crap out at day three. Not only was their quality bad, their repair customer support was lousy.

So, after googling around a bit, it seems there is a power supply that is probably the cause of my tv woes.... for ~$65 I can get a replacement.
Since I do a similar type of work for a living (replacing electronic parts) I think I'll give this a try first.
It'll be a good project for me & my son, anyway. I'd like to show him that the answer is not always "toss it out & get another one".

Or you might teach him the best lesson. Don't fix junk. And that after buying a $65 part it still doesn't work and you end up tossing it and getting a new one anyways. My dad used to always do stuff like that and it was good for a good laugh......but it might work so might as well try it.

You made the right choice. Here is another Utube site, Shop.Jimmy.Com, that is more detailed on that model:
