sigmonkey#1 engine massive fire on takeoff. Never got more than about 100ft above ground.

From a twitter video I saw, the fire was obvious before nose up. Would/could they not know that?

Too fast, above V1 and obstacles, you commit to fly.
Sometimes, you are in a place where there is no good option, only the best.
At that point I believe, they did try to fly, (and hoping) to be able to pick a place to put it down, if they could not make a return.
But that thing was way heavy, and above gross landing weight by 200,000 lbs, it could land, but stopping with only brakes would have been very tough with 12,000 feet and nearly 170 kts on the wheels at touchdown.

Agreed. As someone who wore a flight suit for 15 years, every time these things happen my heart breaks. When you go to work every day you never think it'll happen to you. Until it does.
Mechanical things break. Whether it's due to negligence or just sheer chance, it doesn't matter. Lives were lost, and that is tragic.

I'm no pilot, but I would much rather take my chanes over running the runway while still on the ground than lose an engine on take off.
