We use VPI (Nationwide) for our 2 dogs. They pay promptly after all our claims. Cheers Jaycat Good...Bad...I'm the guy with the gun!!!

I had VPI for Charlie The Cocker Spaniel Who Lived On Cox Road for about 10 years and for that time the premiums and reimbursements were pretty good. After Charlie got up there in years, though, the premiums started getting expensive and VPI started denying a lot of his veterinarian bills so I cancelled the policy. If/when I ever get another dog, I'll just set aside $100/mo. for vet. & grooming bills as kind of a doggy HSA.

https://www.kiplinger.com/pers...the-cost-of-pet-care Yes I’d evaluate. We usually always own a dog, never got pet insurance. Looking back, there were a few higher cost surgeries, bone cancer, joint issues/operation & some lesser unexpected Vet trips. I’ve never tried to compare premiums, then the fine print with the larger bills at the Vet. Years ago(old plans) I did know a guy that sold pet insurance, he even seemed iffy on the idea. I’m not even knocking it, who knows, maybe I need it?

I use Healthy Paws, when Pepper got cataracts and went blind, I got her cataract surgery with lenses, $6000.00+ They wrote a check without a complaint. I know the old saying instead of paying premiums just put that money away, but how many really would do that?

I’ll knock it. If you have a reasonably healthy dog, and keep it in a safe environment, don’t do this. Do what marksman41 is doing. We are already overrun with insurance in the human world (I deal with it every day, it’s part of the job). Don’t create that nightmare in the animal world. Your pet doesn’t need it, you don’t need it. In most pet lives, they go in for a yearly exam and boosters, maybe yearly teeth cleaning, and maybe 1 major sx in their lives (spay).. Buy your pet from a reputable breeder, and you will have a contract that involve the breeder for any serious health issues..plus they have carefully selected their stock to avoid serious health issues. It’s what they do. Most mutts* from the shelter are pretty hardy pups, and the shelter/humane society has already monitored them for a period of time to see what their health is like. Now if you know you’re getting a compromised pet, then go for it, but otherwise, NO. They are just taking your money, imho. I’ve had pets for over 45 years, and have dealt with broken legs, major abdominal surgeries, strokes, seizures, fight injuries, etc. The only time I had pet insurance was when it came with the pup I purchased from a reputable breeder. When it lapsed, I did not renew. Now if they had deals for dental only, I might think on that.. or if my vet themselves offered a “plan” in house.. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

We are dog people, always have been. Have a Lhasa Apso (did I spell that right?) who turned 9 in January. We've only had pet insurance once with all our dogs over the last 35 years, and the premiums were far more costly than the treatment for whatever it was for whichever dog had troubles. That includes the treatment for a brain tumor for Scooter, our late, beloved Wheaten Terrier. We cancelled. We started putting $50 per month away for the dog's possible emergencies or illnesses. It has been easy and our dog likes to sit by the safe and count the money she thinks is hers. Bob

I self-insure our dogs. The cost/benefits wasn't worth it to me. And I decided when the time comes, I would rather have them euthanized than prolong their life and their suffering just for my sake. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
