And by her reaction, you would have thought I just saved her life.

Delivery people are working extra hard these days. I rarely drink sodas, but bought some just to give out to them when I can catch them.

It costs so little to be kind, and I think it made her day.

Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet.

Whenever I would find an old cooler, I would fill it with ice and a six pack of beer and leave it out in the morning for the garbage men. I could throw just about anything out and they'd take it. Big Grin

I told some people at work that once and one of them commented "Oh great, so they're drinking and driving." One of the guys used to be a garbage man and he replied "Oh don't you worry, they were drinking already" lol

Since I've already been branded a bad, bad man in the Biscoff thread, let me freely admit the first thing this thread brought to mind are those infamous pictures of a comely female UPS delivery driver in very short shorts. Big Grin Were she at my door I'd offer her a coke too. Big Grin

One year I was so busy at work I didn't have time to attend the company Christmas luncheon. One of my co-workers noticed I was missing, and brought me back a plate of food. I've never forgotten that. It really is the small and simple things that make a huge impact on someone's life.

My wife bakes our guy brownies...the trash dudes, recycle dudes too...

In the Summer, most deliveries come with me in the garage/ man cave...door open. The ups dude loves cars too and we shoot the breeze. I offer him a beer that he always refuses but takes the flavored water often.

I actually used to work with my UPS man. He told me that in most areas he has 40 stops an hour, and can work 12-14 hour days. Makes me crack up when some people complain that they aren’t given a royal introduction to their package upon delivery.

On a more serious note, some years back I gave our UPS driver a pocket Leatherman.

When I was in my mid 20's, a college classmate and I were opening up a quicklube shop and doing a lot of work on the building ourselves. The town kept delaying our opening for stupid reasons and during that time money was super tight. I took up delivering the Boston Globe in the mornings, getting up at 3:30AM each day. I had one customer that would always have a cup of hot coffee ready for me. Great folks and I really appreciated it!

You're a good dude. They catch a ration of shit lately, too, due to Covid delays on shipping.

I feel bad for my mail person when my bullet order comes in. 5000 rounds of 9mm lead is heavy.

Never had a bad delivery person here. they all go out of their way to make sure the delivery is done right.

Last fall I met the amazon driver at the end of my driveway to avoid him having to do a 180 on my driveway.

He couldn't hand it to me. Thinking "GERMS" he said he has to get the photo..which was true. So I told him I wanted to be in the photo and he had no problem with it. Brighten his day a bit.

For some reason, it's the FedEx gals that I've seen that seem to be more attractive. Of course, I'm probably of the age where they think I'm "harmless", and calling them "honey" is just so quaint to them....

I try to always offer the lawn care guys, who come weekly during the season, bottled water or gatorade or soda, if I can catch them. Sometimes it's a different day or time, but I do what I can.

The crazy thing is, they often refuse water or gatorade and say they already have plenty for the day in their truck.

When doing something like this, one will often not remember what the detail was but will remember the kindness and how it made them feel.

I do some volunteer work when I can, and I think these sorts of things do as much or more for me than those who receive.

When my wife and I lived in New Jersey our mail man was the same person we had the 9 years we lived in our house. It was the same for our trash collectors.
Every year we would put beer and cookies out around the holidays for the trash collectors, and just cookies for the mail man.
Before we moved from New Jersey to Florida we put out a lot of trash several times as we cleaned out house. We always a case of beer on top of the pile.
They took everything and told us to put out as much as we wanted and they would take it away no problem.

About 20 years ago we had a gas line leak down the road. The cop at our corner was turning everyone around and sending them back. I said "I live right here!" He said OK. So I went inside and brought out a few cans of pop in a cooler lid. Sure made his day because it was hot and he was busy. As I was leaving he said he wasn't supposed to drink in Uniform. I laughed and pointed out that I wasn't going to tell.

That's awesome. Regularly give the delivery, postal, and garbage truck operators drinks when we can. My kids love doing it.
