It sounds as though the result of your cataract surgery was uncommonly good:

“I couldn't be more pleased, I was up to 2.50 readers and now I can see close up w/o readers better than before with the readers. Distant vision is night and day improved I can actually distinguish textures in pavement such as sand or gravel, I had lost that ability years ago. Colors are so bright now and no haze.”

I’d dearly like to know the brand of IOL (intraocular lens) that your surgeon used. Could you please check and report?

I'll try to find out, but here's where I had mine done. Steven Powell was who I used.

Thanks in advance for looking that up – I’m eagerly awaiting your answer. And I have another question: when did you have your cataract surgery? Here’s why I ask:

My ophthalmologist is also an eye surgeon that does cataracts, and he’s a professor of ophthalmology at UCSD here in San Diego. The last time I saw him I asked about the “Crystalens” IOL which provides 1 or 2 diopters of true accommodation – that’s not a lot, but significantly better than none.

https://www.allaboutvision.com...commodating-iols.htm

He wasn’t enthusiastic about the “Crystalens” IOL. He said that its ability to provide focusing accommodation diminished after a couple of years as a result of scaring inside the lens capsule that remains after the natural lens is removed.

So I’m curious to know how long it’s been since your surgery, and if you’ve seen the accommodation ability diminishing. I’m hoping that the accommodating IOLs that you got are better than the Crystalens IOL.

Not long Pipe Smoker, May 8 and May 22 this year.

I have heard a few people say that while one may not need readers or glasses for distance after cataract surgery, that after a period of time your "new vision" regresses a little and you may need glasses again. At one of my follow ups I asked Steve about this and he said "absolutely not unless another eye issue develops, otherwise these remain effective for lifetime. There is one occurrence that happens in maybe 1 in 3 people where after a period of time they experience a haze, almost like looking through a light frost on a windshield, but that's easily remedied in a minute with laser and doesn't reoccur". 15 years ago a friend had this occur maybe 6 months after cataract surgery in one eye only. His new eye was perfect afterward but then started going bad. When he went back they hit it with a laser and it's been fine ever since.

ridewv, I'm also following this with interest--not for me right now but for my wife. She would like not to have to wear glasses for reading after cataract surgery, so a good accommodative IOL would be great.

I contacted their general Email a few weeks back asking specifically what lens were implanted but I never heard back. When I asked, before the procedure, one of the technicians said they are made by "anchor" (not sure if I'm spelling it correctly.) Next time I go in town I'll stop in and see if I can speak with someone who will know.

I just got back from a 12 day ride and many times over that time I thought how fortunate I was to have my eyes back and not have to bother with readers. I was able to see road maps almost as well as when I was young only having a little difficulty reading the tiniest little towns, and even those I could read under good light. And just seeing the bright colors again and images in the distance clearly.
I was coming home last night around 10:00 through an active construction zone on I-70. They funneled all traffic to the right edge of the slow lane and the berm which was combined to make a temporary lane. There were lights of all kinds in many places, bright glaring work lights, police flashers, machinery headlights sometimes pointing directly at oncoming traffic, sections of pitch dark, then more lights and machines, pick up trucks with flashing lights, on and on. I had to ride miles through this and it was made worse by having to look through the worn, scratched shield on my helmet visor. I simply could not have seen well enough to ride through that the last few years.

Pipe Smoker, not trying to highjack the thread but just thought I'd let you know I had great results like ridewv did with the ACRY SOF IQ implants by TORIC. They are made by Alcon according to the cards they gave after they did my surgery. The cards have the model no. SN6AT5, power info, etc on them. My surgery was done in '13 so I'm sure they've even gotten better. Just thought I'd pass this on in case it helps. Good luck. BTW, I went from being legally blind without my glasses to not needing them since my surgery.

Good to hear because now that I read this I realize Alcon is the brand she mentioned, I mistakenly posted mine were made by "anchor". I do not have the "model" of the implants though.

I had Lasix on both eyes about 15 years ago, 20/15 in both eyes until cataract surgery in my left eye.
I'm screwed cataract is gone but vision is 20/40 the best it's gonna get
Told with previous Lasix it's more difficult to get "calculations "
Beware if you've had Lasix and getting cataract surgery

There’s gotta be more to it than previous eye surgery. (Note: it’s “LASIK” surgery; Lasix is a diuretic medication! Smile)

Are you sure there’s not another underlying condition impacting your vision?

Qusstions: If your vision was 20/15 why did you have cataract surgery?
Do you have 20/40 vision uncorrected or with the best glasses Rx? It is more difficult to accurately calculate the IOL power especially if the corneal data pre Lasik isn't available, but any residual refractive error can be corrected with glasses.

Based on several posts in this thread I’ve concluded that member ridewv likely received the “Clareon Vivity” extended vision IOL made by Alcon.

Yup those are the "basics" offered by Alcon in their Clareon IOL line.

I would’ve guessed that the Clareon Monofocal was the Alcon “basic”.

And we’re still hoping that you’ll call your doctor’s office to get a definite report of the IOLs that you received. The brand and model.
