I wouldn't call this hunting either but if it's legal so be it. What disappoints me is the number of people who hunt out of season. Keep their limit of fish three times a day. Hunting and fishing can really be a disease with some people just like gambling and drinking. They can't bring themselves to stop doing it. I have seen it. People who fish all day. Catch their limit of fish take them home clean them and go right back out. All day and into the night. Same with hunting. Take the bow out during non season to hunt deer or any other four legged creature that happens to cross their path. I know guys who have shot deer with a bow standing on their front door stoop in their jammies in the off season. There is very little DNR enforcement and even when caught the first couple times the punishment isn't near harsh enough. They have the ability to confiscate boats cars, trucks, guns whatever they want but they do this in only extreme circumstances. "Fixed fortifications are monuments to mans stupidity" - George S. If you think hanging a feeder is all you need to do to kill deer, then you have a lot to learn. I am talking to those posting in this thread, not the person who hung the feeder in the picture.
Your location is "in the cornfields." A farmer plants and cuts 100 acres of corn and it's fine to hunt over but not corn from a feeder? That is why game laws are different in every region of the country. The deer are different, the ecosystem is different, so the regulations must be different. Well he has to get in his hut 30 minutes before the scheduled time the feeder dispenses what else is there? I guess aim and pull the trigger. Are you comparing a 100 acre cornfield to a timed corn dispenser being placed in front of your hut or tree stand? No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

If it's legal there, who cares? As for ethics, there may not be a stalk or chase, but these are not present in varmint hunting (additionally, you don't eat them) or fishing, either. "The Almighty, He put some livin' things on this earth so a man can eat." - Festus Haggen, Gunsmoke

I used to be much more of a purist, but anymore I don't much care. Put them down quickly and cleanly however you can and enjoy the meat. There's too many frickin' deer around anyway. Just the unfairness of it and it's not legal here. Same with a neighbor who tosses their food scraps out to bait critters like raccoon, skunk, and opossum, just to shoot them. He boasts "I like to take my .22 magnum out on the porch, turn on the spotlight, and shoot them!" WTF! No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

My point is that hanging that feeder does NOT make deer come to it. It definitely does not make mature deer or mature bucks come to it. They are not robots. Feeders are supplemental food to deer and in fact they most often prefer other food sources to corn. They also visit feeders at night way more than they do in the daytime. Obviously, feeders can help but it is nowhere near "fish in a barrel", as some would suggest. It is not any more "unfair" to put out food in order to kill a deer than it is to hunt over existing food or food plots to kill a deer. And it is nothing like spotlighting and shooting them at night. There ain't much difference in the man I want to be and the man that I really am.

Harvesting meat is a good way to put it, which is perfectly OK if that's the purpose. It's still more sporting than buying beef at the grocery store.

Agree to disagree? If it didn't make it easier then they wouldn't do it. I don't really care one way or the other, I was just making an observation. I have been a strong proponent of deer culling in my area. Too many ticks and diseases associated with them, too many car accidents, animals starving.... However to say it doesn't make it easier, I'm not really sure. My company set up feeding stations to lure deer in in an attempt to treat the deer to reduce tick populations. Anytime we went to refill them, in the daytime, they were surrounded by deer. Just my anectodal evidence. Just to be clear, I am pro hunting even though I don't do it myself. LOL of course deer feeders lure deer that's the point. That's why they are supposedly illegal to use during deer hunting season because then it'd be deer baiting season. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

I was not aware that this setup was illegal. Even so, it is malum prohibitum, i.e., only illegal because somebody said so. "The Almighty, He put some livin' things on this earth so a man can eat." - Festus Haggen, Gunsmoke

It is only illegal in some places. In Georgia, for instance, it is 100% legal. There ain't much difference in the man I want to be and the man that I really am.

do you use bait when you go fishing? is it still called fishing? There ain't much difference in the man I want to be and the man that I really am.

As long as the population is kept under control, who cares how they are harvested? Some just want the meat and want to get it as easily as possible. Some want to be cave men and sneak up and kill them with a sharpened rock. Both of them help to control the population and in the end it does not matter who defines what real hunting is.

Here in Florida it is legal IF it has been in place, and continuously stocked and in operation for 6 months prior to hunting season, AND it is on private land. If you just put it up for hunting season, it is illegal hunting over bait. I guess that they figure if you are paying for 6 months to fatten them up, you may as well eat them too. That's more like a seafood restaurant where you can pick your lobster. I'd still do it, but wouldn't call it fishing. I'd much prefer a real hunt. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. No if I fished I wouldn't use food to bait them, I'd use lures to trick them. The great white hunter neighbor that baits the critters with scraps also baits bear by hanging a chunk of meat from a tree right out from his cameras and shooting shack.
