With Fox News’s Ratings in Free Fall, the Future Looks Bleak
Most here will probably not be shocked by this. It will be interesting to see how far FOX falls.

It's a good article.
He's spot on about Megyn Kelly and about Bill O’Reilly.

Now that both are gone, a large part of the problem for Fox News is demographics:

quote:
In the ominous “demographics is destiny” area, much of FNC’s audience is literally dying out. Recent ratings surveys have put the age of the average Fox News viewer at 68 or older, while the average age of CNN’s and MSNBC’s viewers is about a decade younger. In an article titled “Stop Beating A Dead Fox” in NY Magazine (February 3, 2014), Frank Rich, no fan of right of center politics and conservative media, gleefully notes:

All three cable-news networks are hemorrhaging young viewers (as are their network-news counterparts) in an era when television is hardly the news medium of choice for Americans raised online and on smartphones. But Fox News is losing younger viewers at an even faster rate than its competitors. With a median viewer age now at 68 according to Nielsen data through mid-January (compared with 60 for MSNBC and CNN, and 62 to 64 for the broadcast networks), Fox is in essence a retirement community.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Going to a particular place in my house and having people read to me lost its appeal more than a decade ago. I can click through half a dozen news sites and read what I want, when I want in the order I want 24/7. TV news of any political persuasion will go the way of Hallmark greeting cards when the older demographic dies off.

I think Fox has other problems, in addition to the loss of some top talent.
I think their basic marketing model is obsolete. I can stream CNN and numerous other socialist propaganda factories continuously on my ROKU; but I can only get selected interviews from FOX.

I am actually amazed that CNN can find 24 hrs after 24 hrs after 24 hrs of nonstop interviews and pundits who are all ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED! by everything Trump says or does. And, of course, even if he does NOTHING, it is because he is "defeated" or has been "controlled by his handlers", etc, etc, etc.

Of course it is all simply preposterous, but long-term massive continual propaganda REALLY WORKS. That is what history has showed us.

I think what we are seeing is the younger more liberal Murdochs remaking the network into something more acceptable to their social circle.

That's definitely part of it too:

quote:
Bill O’Reilly, however, is only a part of a perfect storm that seems to be engulfing the troubled network. Media wizard Roger Ailes is no longer the guiding hand at the helm of FNC and News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch is ceding more day to day authority to his heirs, sons James and Lachlan, who are widely reported to be much more more liberal than their father. Under the influence of this new guard, News Corp’s executives were therefore prone to unceremoniously dump O’Reilly less than three weeks after the damning New York Times article appeared rather than stand and fight the politically charged accusations against him. (It should be noted that O’Reilly, who continues to assert his innocence, has never had his day in court to confront and defend himself against his accusers, some of whom remain anonymous.)

This. I hope the free market prevails and another media group comes along with a conservative news channel. Frankly, Im surprised that didn't happen long ago with Fox being the top cable channel for so long. The leftists channels have had five or six networks competing for their news watchers but fox has been left unchallenged for decades. If a single channel had come along and provided news as a conservative competitor to fox then we wouldn't have had to listen to the likes of Jaun Williams, and Bob Beckel.

The problem was dumping Ales and O'Reilly.
If they are going to go "lib" now or in that direction then there is no place for me except to not watch any of it.
To me they were peaking when it was O'Reilly followed by Tucker and then Hannity.
Tucker is great but it is not enough.

If Breitbart ever launches a TV channel it will be the final nail in the coffin for Fox News.

You have Lou Dobbs which is one of President Trump's best supporters. Hannity and Tucker would be second.

If I was Fox I would take a hard Libertarian bent. All anti-govt all the time.

I'm tired of the it's okay if our guy does it but it's the worst thing ever if your guy does it.

One news organization that takes a critical eye to ALL of government will draw eyeballs.

To hell with Faux News Corp. I haven't watched them since that Kelly woman trashed out Trump during the Republican debates. I stick with Fox Business News for any "breaking news" as they'll cover anything of importance too, and I don't have to listen to the "prima donnas" of their newsreaders; they've got to be as bad as CNN & MSNBC.

I don't miss O'Reilly as much as I miss knowing which show to watch now to see Krauthammer and Brit Hume .

Used to watch Kelly.
Now only watch Bret Baier and sometimes Greg Gutfeld.
We would have no reason to have cable if it weren't for Fox News.

Gutfield is about it for me. Odd how the graph shifts, downward as they move left. Will they never realize to the right and up?

I also find 68 old for an average age.
oddly old.

By watching this morning I am again reminded that Chris wallace is definitely the best straight-ahead journalist of the current generation.
