On 4th of July, I’d like to show something that will keep the attention of a 9 year old so he can learn something about the founding of this country.

Open to suggestions.

There is an animated series of videos called "Liberty Kids," directed by Judith Reilly. It features the voices of many recognizable stars, and gets five-star reviews on Amazon. I haven't seen them, so I can't personally vouch for them, but one reviewer says she uses them in conjunction with Rush Limbaugh's "Rush Revere" audio series, so they can't be too far-left leaning..

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

Rush Limbaugh has a series of books (also available in other formats) that are geared towards children. Kids that have read them have been very positive.

Don’t know how sophisticated your son might be, but the musical “1776” (to be shown on TCM later this evening) gives a fairly historically (hysterically Roll Eyes ) correct (by Hollywood standards anyway) version of the events in Philly over that Summer; better than “Hamilton” anyway.

Too bad the HBO series John Adams has scenes inappropriate for a 9 year old. Maybe there’s an edited version suitable for kids?? It was a GREAT series and was mildly emotional when President Washington was taking the Oath of Office.

I saw 1776 at fords theater in DC, it was pretty fantastic. I'd recommend the 1972 movie for a kid.

"1776" was a standard part of my middle school's curriculum, either 7th or 8th grade.

There were 2 very good documentaries done. One was narrated by Charles Kuralt called 'The Revolutionary War'. It's quite good. It was shown on the learning channel.

Do a google / internet search for Revolutionary War Documentaries.

They used to show them on the 4th of July, but I dropped my Sat service in 2010 or so.

I also strongly second the Rush Revere books -they are excellent and I'm in my 50's.....

It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.

When I was in 5th grade they sent the entire school to see it at a theater.

It is showing at 10:15 tonight on AMC.

Thanks. Sad to see that there aren't many good movies depicting our nation's history. It's almost as if Hollywood doesn't want to take pride in our country.

April Morning. Its a made for TV movie with Tommy Lee Jones and Chad Lowe, so it should be OK for a 9 year old.
It is set around the initial skirmish at Lexington and Concord.
