Inject yourself! |
For example, I have a Rollsizer Decapper, used to knock out spent primers, and it takes a 4mm hex, a 3/8” hex and a 1” wrench to tune and maintain. I’ve bought or found an extra of each tool and they are left in a bin by the Decapper. I have an individual impact socket in a bag on the riding lawnmower for the blades. Side cutters that stay with the spool of weed eater line.Stuff like that. Mostly so that I don’t have to try and remember sizes but also so I’m less likely to lose a piece from a set or remember where I left it. Haha. Sort of like the fabric scissors. They stay by the sewing machine and are not to be used for anything but fabric. Do not send me to a heaven where there are no dogs. Step Up or Stand Aside: Support the Troops ! Yup. It seems kinda spendy or that laziness had gotten the best of me, but the thing is there when I need it and I don't need to hunt each one down.

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
Yes. I have a garage set, a travel box set, a gunsmithing set, a reloading bench set, a set for the back of my squad car...and probably a few others I can't think of right now. All different of course, but there's quite a bit of redundancy. Simply owning tools doesn't do you a lot of good if they're not where you need them when you need them.

I’m a proponent of this. Reloading bench, has about three dedicated combo wrenches, range bag has its dedicated few. Ice fishing travel supply bag same idea. Nice to see I’m in good company. ----------The weather is here I wish you were beautiful----------

I have a tool roll and some metric sockets of Toyota specific sizes in my truck. Always in the truck. All the rest of my hand tools reside in the tool chest in the garage. My expensive gunsmithing tools with special grind bits stay in the accessories closet in the bedroom where the gun safe is. Along with special 870, M1A, Glock and AR specialty tools I’ve collected over the years. This message has been edited. Last edited by: ElToro,

Three Generations of Service |
Absolutely. Tool box with related tools in the "mini machine shop" end of the basement - mikes, parallels, dial indicators, wrenches of related sizes, etc. Tool box next to the new lathe in the shop with pretty much the same assortment of tools, plus a few. Tool box with related tools in the "hobby room" end of the basement - hobby knives, sprue nippers, tweezers, sanding tools, etc. Tool box with general mechanic tools in the garage. Tool bag with tools related to electrical work. Tool box with tools related to plumbing. BIG toolbox in the shop with every tool I've ever found a use for, plus a few. Duplicates of cordless drill and impact, one set in the basement, one in the shop. Four 4.5 inch grinders: 1 with grinding disk, 1 with slitting disk, 1 with flap disk, 1 with wire cup wheel. Saves time/aggravation switching. Actually, I have a fifth: Cordless for on-site work, usually has a slitting disk as they're handiest for cutting rusted bolts. Can't be tight if it's in two parts... I won't say I've never met a tool I didn't like, but I don't remember the last time that happened. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I have specific portable tool kits for specific needs plus a complete tool chest with the same tools. Electrical, diagnostic, general repairs. I even have one with DeWalt drivers and general tools for handy work. Just grab the bag I need and go. I even have a selection of jacks for specific work. Each car has a tool set for emergencies that includes tire plugs and a compressor. Fuses, oil, jumper cables, wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, mini code reader and a box cutter. We took electrical repair and general sets to fix Para's truck. ____________________________ Eeewwww, don't touch it! Here, poke at it with this stick.

Organization is not my strong suit, so, yes. I have duplicates of tools in place for specific needs. Tractor, shooting bench, reloading bench, leather bench, water filtration system, etc. My problem is half the time it still takes way too long to find what I'm looking for. Did I mention organization is not my strong suit. I have learned to use the 5-gallon bucket method, though, so if the tool is not in its assigned spot, I can usually dump the bucket and find it. ____________ Pace

Just Hanging Around |
Oh hell yes. I have a tool chest out in my garage, a tool bag in the house garage, a tool bag in the basement, and special tools stashed wherever there is a special purpose. Harbor Freight’s a great place to buy a wrench, or pliers, or something you don’t use very often so you can keep it where you need it.

No More Mr. Nice Guy |
I hate when a tool is missing from my roll cabinet! So I keep a second minor kit in the kitchen with pliers and a couple of screw drivers. I also have a dedicated motorcycle tool kit which I use for all work on the bike. That way when traveling on the bike I can be confident I have the right mix of wrench and hex key sizes, without carrying tools that don't fit, for any basic repair or adjustment.

I do the same thing with my fishing gear, each rod has its own tackle box with the lures and hooks it uses. Saves a ton of time and frustration. Never have to hunt for the right size weight or hook.

Get Off My Lawn |
Yes, I have a set of emergency tools in my truck, just the basics- hammer, screwdrivers, crescent wrench, pliers, dikes, tape measure, etc. Almost the same set in my house in the kitchen drawer. And of course my tool chest out in the garage. You bet! Reloading bench has its own set of tools as does the RV and truck. Most importantly is that the wife has her own set of tools.

Optimistic Cynic |
I do the same, caches of tools in various locations around the house where they will be most useful (or be sorely missed if not immediately available). To a lesser extent, knives too. Why is it that there are still too many times when you can't find the one tool you need for a specific job?

Admittedly, it’s mostly a work thing, but every station should have a set of the needed tools for maintenance. Toolboxes etc are for repair/etc.
