Hi all,

EDIT: Now looking for suggestions on a replacement TV...

I have a Panasonic Viera TC-P50G10 television that was built in 2009. This morning I went to turn it on, and nothing happened. I check the cable connections, the power outlet works. The power button on the TV does nothing. It's like the TV is dead. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? Thanks.

Chris

Sounds like it’s internal power supply/board may have gone bad.

Is the red led on the front blinking? If not, click on the “answered” box: https://www.ifixit.com/Answers...er.+Will+not+turn+on.

Happens on flat screens from time to time. Lay it down face down, pop the back off. Look for the power board. There are usually a set of capacitors on that one the bulge and die. Do make sure everything has been powered down and disconnected for a while before touching anything though. Capacitors can hold a charge even after being disconnected from their power source. Though the caps in there aren't that big, there are many of them.

There are also several YouTube vids that will walk you through it.

No, nothing blinks when I try to power it on or unplug/replug it to the wall.

TV's have become disposable items these days although most likely cause here is a blown peer supply. The web has created a virtual warehouse of spare parts for someone with moderate skills to fix these things though. I replaced a DLP chip in an unwatchable Mitsu rear projection TV that was otherwise ruined and it's been great ever since but just because you can, should you?

I'd seriously consider upgrading the set at this point. In the past 10 years the tech has really advanced, especially over Plasma which I used to have as well. Better picture, cooler running, less power consumption, better cost/size ratio, more app integration. I don't know your situation but if this one was your last TV purchase, you'll be blown away by the advances.

Thanks. Tried this and a few other things, didn't work. I may try taking a look inside next.

That may be what I end up doing. Any specific suggestions on a comparable new TV that would last another 10 years? About 50-55" is a good size for this room. I tend to stick with traditional brands, e.g. Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, etc. But I'm open to other suggestions which may offer better tech and reliability.

I had a TV do this a while back.... two things were happening...
Battery in remote was dead and TV had gotten set to 'PC' input..... I could actually turn the TV on with its power button but nothing showed on the screen just black... and so I did not realize it was on.

No real reason any current LED TV shouldn't last 10 years but the tech progresses so fast they are usually woefully out of date by that point.

Tv's are so cheap now. I paid $1200 for my first 50 inch dlp tv back in 2008. I just bought a 70 inch vizio for $500.

Got my mom a 40 inch Roku tv for under $200.

Tv's are probably the best value in consumer electronics considering the longevity and usefulness for the price.

OK, so now I'm pretty convinced to get a new TV. Thus I've edited the title of the thread. Here's the top two I'm considering, based on CNET's reviews:

Best 55" TVs for 2020

TCL 55R625 for $550 - Best 55-inch TV for the money, period

LG OLED55B8P for $1100 - Best high-end 55-inch TV for the money

I really think the TCL will fit my needs quite well. Not sure if I wanna spend double for the LG just for OLED. Thoughts?

The Panasonic was a well made plasma. If you like the look of plasma, deep blacks and good viewing angles look at OLEDS. Brands are Sony and Lg.
They have similar characteristics including potential for burn in. They cost a bit more but show well.

I am a fan of Vizio and the M series is comparable to the TCL 6 series. The vizio m55 is under $400 it seems.

I'd go with the TCL 6 series. Costco has them for $499 but they were $100 cheaper last month so you might shop and beat the price. My sister got one and it's as good as I've seen.

I bought 4 Hisense brand tvs over the last 3 years and am well satisfied. Costco recently had 43" Hisense Roku tvs for $189 delived so I bought 2 for bedrooms. I have Roku ultras on the 2 older Hisense as they aren't smart enough to have the youtube tv app.

Against my better judgment I mounted a 50" Hisense to the wall on a swivel mount. Worked great for nearly 3 years and then the sound died. TV had a 4 year parts/labor warranty so the tv had to come off the wall for inspection/repair. Hisense was good as gold honoring warranty (but only because I had my original receipt. I think I would have been sol w/out it). They sent a local tv sevice out with new speakers and a new motherboard. He spotted the problem, a capacitor had swelled and leaked. He replaced mb and speakers and tv is like new again.

Streaming is the way of the future and TCL 6 series seems to be the best moderate priced streaming tv. My roku Hisense are great w youtube tv. only need 1 remote and channel/provider changes are much faster than the early days of Roku.

I had the Panny TC-P58V10. Bought it in 2010. Great picture. Never had any problems with it but wanted something bigger and smarter. Replaced it last summer with an LG-OLED77C8PUA. Got it for half of retail on Greentoe with the warranty. When I watch it there is always a moment when I say to myself, "That is an absolutely fucking amazing picture!"

I too was interested in the LG OLED but ended up with a Samsung QLED. Reason, the tv faces the western exposure windows of my house. The Samsung screen has a flat finish to where the LG had a gloss finish. The flat finish is so much better at getting rid of the glare from the windows.

I really wanted the LG but am pleased with the Samsung.

Now, if the tv does not face any windows, the LG would be an awesome addition.

As cheap as TV'S are today there's no sense, as you're already discovered, bothering to repair one that's 10 years old. I have a 60" Sharp that I've been happy with as well as a 65" and 75" Samsung. Lots of folks seem to be happy with Hisense, Vizio, LG and Samsung so you probably can't go wrong with any of them.

Samsung for me. I don’t care for any of their other products, but they do make great TVs.

I've got two of the ever-loved high end Pana plasmas still - a 55 and 65. We call the 65 our little heater!

This thread makes me a little sad, know that day is coming. As much as new TV tech has changed w/r/t content it's going to be difficult to replicate the picture quality without OLED or obviously 4K content. Hoping these hang on enough for the OLED sets to come down a little more!

Good luck with your replacement. Remember to play taps when you bury the ol' gal.

(looked back, one is from '08, other from '12. I've surely cursed myself)
