I shipped a Star PD to a buyer about a week ago. No issues...I paid and printed the label and dropped it off at my local UPS Customer Service location (can't use UPS Store). They took the box and gave me a receipt.

Its been a second but it worked well for me. Less of a hassle than doing it myself, and cheaper. If I was shipping one today its likely what I'd use.

Per their website , when you get a shipping label from them , they tell you where to drop it off .

Yeah, I saw that. That's why I asked the question here. It would be nice to have that information before I pay for a label; if it turns out to be really inconvenient, I'll just hand the firearm over to Pawn Shop Guy (my friendly FFL) for shipping. It might cost a little more to do it that way, but his location is convenient and he usually has a small selection of handguns to look at, occasionally with something interesting.

Yes, it did. As others have stated it saves quite a bit of money. Bud's (the people behind Shipmygun) has negotiated some good firearm shipping rates that aren't available to Joe Blow walking up the the UPS counter.

For it to work well as possible it also takes the buyer cooperating. What I mean by that is SMG's database has an extensive list of FFLs, and the buyer needs to pick one. The frustration happens when the buyer:
  • decides to get locked in on they only use "their guy" as an FFL and go through the process to add "their guy" to SMG's database. Betwen "their guy" and SMG it adds 3 to 5 days. FFLs are fungible, pick one and don't add 3 to 5 days to the process.
  • acts like he/she has been asked to split the atom by having to chose a FFL off a list, and they turn an easy decision into a multiday process. The seller also doesn't want to read an e-mail about the buyer's thought process on how they decided how to choose between FFL A & FFL B. Not every thought needs to be expressed.

Your FFL guy can ship thru the US mail(unlike the rest of us) so that’ll probably be cheaper.

^^^This! ShipMyGun is really best for those that don't have an FFL that's conveniently located and easy to deal with. Most every FFL will ship USPS because it's so much cheaper AND convenient for them as well. Shipping via UPS or FedEx is cost prohibitive for anyone that's not an FFL (maybe even out of the question based on recent rule changes), so when there are no other options, that's where ShipMyGun shines.

I've used ShipMyGun a couple times successfully, and not been successful a couple other times.

My personal strat, I don't find them reliable so go a different route but as always others mileage may vary. I'm not a person who tries to squeeze every penny out of a transaction.

When I did use them successfully, just dropped the package off at the nearest shipping point, no sweat.

If I'm shipping my own gun to a refinish shop, I'll just send it as "machined parts" UPS Ground. If it's something I sold on Gunbroker and I want a slight chance of getting paid in the even of loss, I'll go ShipMyGun. But SMG can take a few days to get a label to you after ordering and they don't answer the phone.
