My commute doesn't get better when school lets out. I live only five miles from work, takes about 12 minutes to get there.

No, it doesn't. My commute actually gets worse - the traffic volume is at least 30% more. "If Gun Control worked, Chicago would look like Mayberry, not Thunderdome" - Cam Edwards

Yes, but there is a trade off. Once school is out the highway gets more busy during the day with the tourist coming to the ocean. Night rush hour is actually more busy when school lets out. So close to the ocean yet hardly go when school is out due to the traffic. Living the Dream

yes, and on top of that, traffic gets worse around the start of school and daylight savings time changes as people figure out their schedules. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
