Ten years ago, when my wife and I decided to move, it was pretty radical- 2600 SF home plus full basement 3 car garage on 6+ acres - to a new community 2000+ miles away, initially renting

We got an estate liquidation company to come in and sell everything to the bare walls. All we had to do was tag anything we wanted to keep and put it in a safe room ( being very careful to greatly limit what we kept) went from a house and garage full of stuff to one 6x6x8 foot shipping container and a half full mini van for the trip. It was quite liberating and relieving actually.

The movers wouldn’t take ammo, so a lot of the van space was cans full of ammo !

My wife and I moved after 26 years, from a 2900 SF / 1 acre house / land to a 2400 SF / 0.67 acre house / land. We still own the previous home, and have been slowly getting it emptied out. My job takes a lot of time, and the distance (100 miles) adds to the difficulty / slowness of getting it done. It's amazing how much JUNK you accumulate over the years. Good luck.

Congrats! We're in the process of fixing the house to sell and move. We've been in this one for 28 years. It is amazing how much shit we have accumulated. Looking to downsize from a 4/5BR to 3 with an office. We still want to be the hotel of choice when the kids visit. I also still want a reload room, just smaller than now.

For us now, both 80, with three grandkids and another on the way, everything is about proximity to family. Before grandkids, we had a place on the ocean and I loved it, planned to retire there. Then came the grandkids; and this place is so remote we would never have seen them. Then came the reality that we can't be that far from good medical care.
The third reality is that I am not practicing any of my hobbies except doing some singing.
We have a serious problem disposing of woodworking, bicycling, astronomy, photo stuff; associated books and accessories. And probably the Honda S2000, to be realistic.

Is this a ‘local move’? How many miles apart?

At least local moves are a little easier, with a little overlap no need to rush things.
