Greensboro, NC Advice
Eyeing up a transfer to Greensboro from Austin, Tx. I'd be working at a location near the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. I'd be looking to stay within say a 20 min drive of that location. Can anyone provide any insight on the city as a whole and the sought after neighborhoods in that area? I'd be looking to purchase a little historic 2 bd bungalow type house. Wife works from home and no kids. Thx for any input.

Stamey's BBQ is near the coliseum which is a nice plus. Best BBQ in Greensboro. Its pretty ghetto around there. It's been a while since I've lived there but I can ask my mom, she's a realtor for Guildford county. Oak Ridge is 20 minutes away, out of the city, really nice land and small town. It would be worth looking at.

Yes, the area around the Coliseum is pretty hood. Not somewhere to live. I would consider anything south of the UNCG campus to be not somewhere to live. (I worked at UNCG, which is right down the street from the Coliseum.)

If you want something older as far as houses, maybe look at the Fisher Park neighborhood, which is just NE of the UNCG campus. Even in the worst traffic, I can't see it being more than a 15 min drive.

There is also the College Hill neighborhood, which is immediately east of the UNCG campus. It can be quaint, but I don't think I'd live there. Too many students most of the year and just barely outside the hood.

Personally, I'd suggest the north side of the city like Lake Jeanette or the Guilford Courthouse area. Perhaps I'm biased because I lived right across from the Guilford Courthouse battlefield park, but it's a much quieter area.

To be honest, it's not a long drive. From Guilford Courthouse to UNCG, my commute was 20 minutes, so to the Coliseum it would be maybe 25-30 min.

The loop roads are pretty useful, too, and if you live on the north side, it's a pretty easy on to the freeway and off right near the Coliseum.

Stay far FAR away from the area around Carolina Circle Mall. Baghdad at the height of the war was safer. Check west Burlington/Alamance County or eastern Guilford county.

My daughter used to go to Elon, about 25 mins east on 40. Its a nice little town.

My nephew lives in High Point...meh.

If I were moving to Greensboro Id look at Oak Ridge or the area around Oak Hollow Lake.

I have to echo many of the other members sentiments regarding the area.

I was there numerous times this past year doing recruiting events for the census bureau.

It would be somewhere I would work patrol so I could run and gun but I wouldn't live there.

Pretty much the whole city and much of the county is within a 20 minute drive of the Coliseum. Reach out to me, email in profile.

Its gets pretty nice 5 or 6 blocks north of coliseum across tracks. Take Chapman street head north from Triad Blvd at north side of coliseum complex. Short commute lots of renovated bungalows.

I (last week) just closed on a house in Kernersville (located about 20 minute drive to the west).
So far, it's a pretty nice area.
Located right between the three big cities (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point) you can find anything and everything you need within easy driving distance.

all good advice, I live near the airport so anything north and/or west of city central is where I'd be looking. the new loop runs right thru airport area and makes getting to any side of town a breeze.

I love Stamey's BBQ but since I started smoking my own I just swing by there for hushpuppies and sides and sometimes a big bottle of their sauce

I have lived in Kernersville my whole life and it is a nice place to live.

My ex wife lives in a very desirable neighborhood in Greensboro called the Cardinal. I don't recommend anyone be any where near her.

When I was looking at switching from the Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner to the ME office in the Winston Salem/Wake Forest area, I wanted to live in Kernersville.

But..... Did anyone listen to my reasons............... NO.......The other half wanted to stay in the armpit called Durham and bought a house out in the County.. (hence one of the reasons I am at Camp Atterbury IN)

My ex-wife lives in the Cardinal too! In the big house I paid for. Good times. Wink Smile

I got a 2.0 wife and a nice Townhouse off Lake Brandt. The Lake Brandt road area of Greensboro is still pretty nice. And safe. Regards 18DAI

I just relocated to Winston Salem. So far it's pretty vanilla. I like the area, but the restaurants and bars all suck. Like you, we have no kids. That seems to be a bit of a problem here as everyone we met has been married since 19 with a brood of chirrin'. Our prior house was 110 years old. We prefer historic homes. There were none to be had. Everything available was a crackerjack drywall palace.
