So the Texas House said no to the Senate amendments. A bit surprising, but (per Texas GOA, anyway) there seems to be reason to believe that the Backstabbing Baltimorean of The Woodlands (that's Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, IOW) deliberately added the amendments to make it more difficult for the houses to jointly agree to a bill and to deliberately trigger a House Rules provision that would've made it possible for the bill to be thrown out on a technicality!

The five Senate and House members have been named to the conference committee. The House side is apparently fine - they named two Dems to it, but they're both among the seven Dems who originally voted for passage and one of them, Canales, seems to be fired up for passage. The Senate side is composed of Senators who voted for passage. Schwertner is the bill's godfather in the Senate, Campbell has an excellent record on this issue. Don't know much about Brian Birdwell, Bryan Hughes, and Brandon Creighton; if anybody does then please sing out.

Meanwhile House Speaker Phelan and Patrick (effectively the head of the Republican majority in the Senate) are both chirping happy thoughts into Tweetville. Neither is known for supporting permitless carry in the past and both have been accused of actively sabotaging pro-gun legislation in the past. Do they think they can quietly torpedo it in the two and a half weeks remaining in the legislative session? Have their constituents put the fear of God in them, or perhaps in their cauci?

The fur flies, the drama grows, but it's pretty clear that the politicians have drawn the conclusion that the voters of Texas are determined to have Constitutional Carry.

Texans, need to call HB 1927 sponsor Rep. Matt Schaefer and ask for him to swallow hard and take the bill as it sits.

It may not be perfect but it is 98-99% perfect.

Please respectfully communicate this to his staff answering the phone or emails!

There's no reason to not strike hard on both sides. After you call Schaefer, call up Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Majority Leader Phelan, and tell them to get the Senate side to reduce the number of amendments it demands.

The House and the Senate conference committees have reportedly found a compromise. No details available yet; the compromise bill will still have to be approved by both the full House and the full Senate before being sent to the Governor for signature, so I guess we'll get the details of this iteration then.

HB 1927 Schaefer - Constitutional Carry - 1 step away from going to Gov Abbotts Desk

AP is now reporting that it's cleared the Senate and is on the way to the Governor's desk for signature.

This came up in conversation over the weekend & someone mentioned that this would only apply to Open Carry, for non-LTC holders.

Can someone point to a source to confirm/deny?

Well, the article isn't clear at all about that. But if that's the case, then that's pathetic.

Texas Legislature. You can see all of the details for it (e.g. votes, proposed amendments, etc), and at the tab at the top is the "text" where you'll find this conference committee text .

Any thoughts regarding HB 957 exempting Texas manufactured suppressors from NFA regulation? Frankly, I'm not sure how that's gonna work out.

^^^ Scuttlebutt is that it's set up to generate a test case in the federal courts before anyone actually has to risk going to jail. Waiting and seeing what happens pretty much seems like the way to go.
