Arrived in Great Lakes 52 years ago 1968. Was the last company to stay in the old wooden barracks. The new school buildings and barracks were already constructed. 2nd Regiment - 22nd Battalion - Company 527.

Boot Camp in GLAKES in February of 1969 in the new barracks, then BE&E (Basic Electricity and Electronics) at "Mainside" in April of '69. Lived in wooden open bay barracks for the 8 weeks (IIRC) of BE&E and then moved into the new brick 2-man room barracks when I started ET"A" school. Then Crypto School at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in May of '70 and back into wooden open bay accommodations. No AC and hotter than the hinges. Just as well, it acclimated me for my first duty station: Clark Air Base, RP in September of '70 and more ancient barracks. Didn't even have windows, just shutters. I was medically DQ’d in 2006. I still don’t regret trying. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. Yeah, I lived in those barracks in Feb. of'65 for I think 4 weeks or so. We had a snow storm so they kept us up in 2hr. shifts all night sweeping the streets so the snow never could build up. I see you went at the wrong time also. I started in Sept. It was cold and the rain in peacoat with Springfield raise over my head on the Grinder was not my idea of fun. Yes you could see daylight from inside of barrack. Me I was sent to this place called San Diego Sub Base. I was hoping for Brooklyn Navy Yard.Fat chance since I was a NYC born and raised.

Yeah, I know the feeling. Got there 10 Jan 1984 for Boot Camp. When we got off the bus at 0 Dark thirty I felt really sorry for the guy next to me. He'd told me on the bus ride there that this was his first trip outside the State of Hawaii. He was wearing the heaviest clothes he had, jeans, a polo shirt and a wind breaker. It was probably 100 degrees colder then he'd ever seen. His teeth were chattering so hard that he drew the attention of the CC's.......Fun times "Blessed is he who when facing his own demise, thinks only of his front sight.” Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem Montani Semper Liberi

I headed off to Cape May myself in December 1984, Tango-119. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago. 十人十色
