AllenInARSipping tequila
Awhile back, I bought a shot of high-end anejo tequila for myself and a buddy at some hipster neu-Mexican joint in Arlington, VA. Now I have long known that shots of Jose is NOT the only way to enjoy tequila, but that shot was a real eye-opener. I mean it was beyond just "tasty". Regrettably, I didn't write down the name of that tequila (and I couldn't have afforded a bottle anyway, each glass was like $35) but I WOULD like to try to develop a nose for tequila.
So.....I am sure some of you out there have some suggestions for beginner's sipping tequila. LOL

TMatsCan’t help you. I’m a long-time tequila aficionado, but I don’t drink añejos at all; doesn’t taste like tequila to me. Good luck

snideraDon Julio Setenta
It's aged like bourbon (not as long) and then filtered, so it's clear. It's smooth, but still has a little of the barrel flavor.
I get it in MX, I think it's about $50-60 here.
Price by the shot is usually about 10x what a bottle actually costs, sometimes worse.
If you can find it, Cazadores Anejo is cheap & pretty good at ~$30. The Reposado is my favorite cheap tequila (<$15 in MX).
Blanco is unaged and/or barely aged & filtered (not sure if that's right, don't usually like blancos)
Reposado is aged a short time, I think it's <1yr, but don't quote me.
Anejo is aged longer ( still less than Whiskey/Bourbon).

smschulzGood Tequila in a sniffer glass is the only way.
Shots are for the cheap stuff.
A good Anejo is a good start.
Then you can appreciate a good Double Anejo.
My favs are Don Julio 1942, Avion 44 and Jose Cuervo Familia > all in the $100~$125 bottle range but well worth it.

maladatI have never found a tequila I am particularly excited about sitting down with a glass of, including Don Julio 1942.
Interestingly, though, mezcal is one of my favorite spirits. Del Maguey Vida is a very good one in the $30-40/bottle range (doesn't give up much to some of the $100-200 mezcals I have tried). Del Maguey Chichicapas is my favorite but is quite a bit more expensive than Vida.

Pipe SmokerThere’s a Mexican restaurant, El Agave, here in San Diego. There are 100+ bottles of exotic tequilas sitting on its wall shelves. Be sure to visit next time that you’re here.

P210Don Julio 1942 is my favorite sipping Tequila. There are probable better ones but that’s the most I’ll spend on a bottle of Tequila.
