U.S. troops landed in Iceland last week ahead of the start the largest NATO military exercise since the Cold War, and apparently, they left their mark in the most appropriate way possible: by drinking every last beer in the nation’s capital.
A significant number of bars in downtown Reykjavík were forced to make emergency beer runs under the onslaught of thirsty American sailors and Marines in town for the start of Trident Juncture 18, Iceland Magazine reports.
Local media estimate that 6,000 and 7,000 U.S. military personnel exhausted beer cellars across the Icelandic capital in the span of a single weekend.

clubleaf206I had a friend who served in the Navy and he was stationed in Iceland, he was transferred there from Bermuda, to add insult to injury. He said it was the first time he saw anti American graffiti. Spray painted on walls in “Rinkydink” were sentiments such as ‘Yankee, go home’.

I was stationed at Keflavik in '87 and part of '88. Icelanders did not want ANY military on the island, not just US Forces. Most of them were polite enough about it, but if you asked them, they would tell you.
Having been stationed or TDY to a few places overseas, it always embarrassed me to see how some troops acted towards the host country and their people. Based on the actions of a few cretins, it's not hard to see why they resented our presence.

Same thing with guys pulling into Hong Kong or, Singapore sprinting down the pier only to head to a McDonald's.
You've sailed 8,000 miles only to go running to shit food?
Those guys must've emptied their entire wallet and ran-up their credit cards to an insane level. Iceland is spectacularly expensive, it's cheaper to buy Icelandic beer here in the US than it is to purchase it in Iceland. We went to a store and got a 6-pack of Einstock (good stuff) it was $22/6-pack, here in the US, it's around $12. The bars/restaurants are about NYC/SF prices, the liquor stores are state-run so, you end up paying a massive premium.
At least those guys are branching out and taking an interest in the local flavors. quote:

You ever been to Iceland? There isn't much out of Reykjavik. Kevlavik has like two bars and they close at midnight. It isn't much of a drinking country, they even had prohibition until the 80s someone told me.

I've never been in any branch of the military. I can tell you one thing for an absolute fact: If I am in a foreign country and I see a bunch of GIs hooping it up, I'll by them the next round and then thank God that they're there. They put their ass on the line for us and the countries that they "visit". Bet you dollars to doughnuts that the host country that is so offended isn't paying shit for the protection that we give them. God bless the US military.

FishOnI've been to Iceland several times and spent time at a few fly-fishing camps. The only people that can outdrink the locals are the Russians.
