I know HDMI2.1/HDCP 2.3 are out and are being included in new receivers (albeit w/ an HDMI issue that sounds like it's fixed for any models shipping as of late 2021).

If I wanted to buy a receiver for home theater to use for the next 5-10 years, is it okay to buy (used) one that only supports HDMI 2.0a/HDCP2.2? Or at this point should I just buy a NIB one w/ HDMI2.1/HDCP2.3? I'm looking at an upper end model for about $600 (2015 msrp of about $1800) or NIB lower end model for about $1200.

I'd prefer to buy the used model but concerned about newer streaming devices and TV's requiring hdmi2.1/hdcp2.3 rending the receiver obsolete in a few years....

Is your concern about audio or video (future standards)?
What will be your primary source? ex:Stream, high res disk, gaming.. etc.

I had an issue with fire tv and Apple TV uhd support and had to upgrade my receiver unexpectedly.

As I look for another av receiver to stream content through these types of devices (say, Apple TV 8k) in a few years, am I going to need to replace my receiver for hdcp2.3? Or will an HDMI’s 2.0a and hdcp2.2 get me through the next 10 years?

Mostly concerned about hdcp2.3 for streamed content. HDMI 2.0 for uhd is all I need. No plans to buy 8k tv in the foreseeable future.

If I was buying a receiver I'd go ahead and get one with HDMI 2.1 and eARC. Especially if you use any modern gaming consoles.

My receiver doesn't have either now, and I was preparing to switch to a new TV recently that had all those features. I wasn't going to upgrade the receiver because of it but if I was getting a new one for whatever reason I would definitely get one with those specs.

Thanks. I'm been trending toward agreeing.

I'm a little uncomfortable spending $600-700 for a used (but great) unit that may be obsolete in the near future. It's a big chunk of change and I should learn from getting burned from the last hdmi/hdcp transition.

I'm thinking it's better to future proof more.

HDMI standards and HDCP address different topics don't they?

HDMI will allow for for more robust audio and video.
HDCP is purely copy protection.

Higher levers of HDMI allow for improvement in video (resolution) and audio (processing including Dolby versions like Atmos).

HDCP issues usually are from copying.

I have never had HDCP issues.
Can you elaborate on what problems you had?

Agree. I'm not as concerned about HDMI. I'm concerned about HDCP.

Perhaps I was doing something wrong but I think because my receiver was not capable of HDCP2.2, I wasn't able to view UHD content; only that content in FHD. I needed to upgrade my receiver to HDCP2.2 to see UHD content.

If that was true, then I'm concerned about buying an HDCP2.2 receiver at this point as HDCP2.3 is rolling out.
