Had a little mishap using my log splitter. Got distracted and wasn't paying attention, and it bit me.

I was talking with my father and he said he's had good luck with a product called New Skin. I read about it, but I am not sure if my finger is in too bad of shape for it. I am keeping it clean and covered with a band aid.

Can I use New Skin on this?

I haven't found New Skin to be very effective. YMMV.

(In any case: I don't think it would work well with that damage.)

Yes, used to use a version of it on parrots that self mutilated at a clinic I worked at and it worked great.
You do need to make sure that wound is properly disinfected, and watch closely for any signs of infection after application. It doesn’t look too deep so I think you’d be fine. I’m assuming you’re up to date on your tetanus, etc.

I have new skin on 2 knuckles as I type. I use it on areas where band-aids won't last long (e.g. hands).

You cut will burn pretty good if you choose to put on new skin.

That sounds more civilized than what I’d normally do with something like that. If it is just the top layer like it appears, I sterilize nail clippers with rubbing alcohol, then trim off all the loose bits, clean thoroughly, apply bag balm liberally, and keep bandaged during the day. The first night or two I might keep bandaged, after that I leave it open at night to air out. The second layer of skin quickly takes over for the first.

Please let us know how the new skin works out. I’m always happy to learn a better approach.

In bowling, we always used super glue instead of that type of stuff.

Reading about people closing deep cuts with superglue makes me cringe a little, but I agree that that’s just surface skin and although it looks nasty and painful I doubt that there’s much chance of infection if covered with New-Skin (I use that stuff all the time). Surface wounds like that I keep clean and disinfected but I never cover them up except maybe at night so I don't screw up the wife's sheets. That should heal pretty quick is my guess. I've never tried New Skin so I can't help there.

New Skin is okay for a simple cut, though I've had infections before when using new skin, even after thoroughly cleaning the area. I keep some in a took box in the event of a minor ding, but otherwise, prefer to use a bandage.

In the picture in the original post, the skin surface is missing. I would not put newskin on that. I'd clean it, and use a triple antibiotic, and use a non-stick dressing for the first few days, changing the dressing at least daily.

One patch lasts for 3 days and you can cut it to size to fit the area. I have done a lot of wound-care and this regenerates with little or No scarring.

If it were me ..... Clean it daily or twice daily and cover it with a band-aid of your choice , (so you won't have to look at it). I like the band-aids with the Peanuts characters on it.

Clean, trim, Bactene, put on some ointment, and a band aid. Remove, inspect, clean, re-oint and cover...

I've only used New Skin for blisters but I imagine it would work.
However, a wound like that I would want to take off the bandage so it gets some "air" for a while which might allow for it to scab up faster.
But alas no doctor here so move at your own peril.

I have cut my hands a lot. For your type of problem I try to keep it clean but open to the air. If it happened when working I would cover it with clean paper towel and tape the ends to the finger with electrical tape. Elec tape stays on very well, I cut it off after a day or two with scissors. Otherwise it tends to pull a wound open.

For this wound I would use an antiseptic cloth, plus tape to keep the cloth fully secured.

I've used it on things like that after a good cleaning with peroxide first with a redo of the process at least daily.
If the redness doesn't start to go away in a day or two or gets worse you need to try a different approach.
A better method may be to clean with the peroxide, dry it, them apply antibiotic cream and a bandage and also repeat once or twice daily.
