I'm afraid it won't end well for her if it was as described in the OP. I wish it wouldn't go bad for her though. I hate thieves.

Woman, 88, charged in shooting at her Nashville liquor store

Andy Humbles, Nashville Tennessean
June 23, 2020

An 88-year-old woman is free on $10,000 bond in connection with a shooting last week at her liquor store on Murfreesboro Pike in Nashville.

May Boyce told police she shot in the direction of a man who she thought was going to steal from the store, according to an arrest affidavit.

She is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The victim is recovering, according to the latest report by Metro Nashville Police.

Boyce told police that on June 16 two men were in the store, named Murfreesboro Road Liquor and Wines, and one approached the counter in a way that she felt they were going to steal from the store, according to an arrest affidavit.

That prompted Boyce to set her gun next to the register, slightly unwrapping the cloth the weapon was in.

The man at the counter next asked for brown liquor and the other, who was the victim, grabbed two bottles, the report states.

Boyce told police that she knew "based on the victim's demeanor that he was going to steal the liquor," and that she walked up to the opening of the counter facing the victim.

Boyce felt the victim lunged at her in a way she thought he might push her down, and the victim then ran toward the exit.

According to the arrest affidavit, Boyce told police she pointed the gun toward the ground in the victim's direction and fired once. The victim yelled he was hit and fell into a stack of bottles.

The other man helped the victim outside, the report states.

In an initial interview with detectives at the hospital while on medication, the victim told detectives he and three friends went to the store to steal liquor, the report states.

The next day, the victim told detectives that he intended to pay for the liquor and denied running toward the exit.

I think a good attorney will get her off with probation. People at 88 are pretty fragile. I used to live in Tennessee and if this goes before a jury I see an acquittal or guilty of a lesser charge with no jail time. The two assailants are already lying and do not appear to be members of Mensa.

If we had a lot more of that, we'd have a lot less of the other.

"Give me some brown liquor". WTF is that all about? Who walks into a liquor store and asks for "brown liquor"?

"The next day, the victim told detectives that he intended to pay for the liquor and denied running toward the exit." After speaking to a lawyer, of course, or collaborating with his three friends.

Having worked in a liquor store in Richmond, I can tell you I heard all sorts of similar strange turns of phrase for liquor from customers of a certain ilk. I needed a translator from time to time.
