MacBook Pro 2012 SSD installation and Battery replacement - well worth the time and $$$ Login/Join

I did one of the family computers today, replaced an old spinning HD with a Solid State Drive and replaced a 6 year old battery that died inside of 30 minutes off the charger.

I put in a Crucial 1TB SSD ($150) and a new battery ($55), plus $10 for the data transfer cable.

It took about 6 hours to transfer the data to the SSD, then I tested that it would boot the MacBook Pro while still using the data transfer cable before diving into the battery and SSD hardware install portion.

That took an easy 30 minutes, which included 10 minutes cleaning out the centuries worth of dust and dog hair that made its way into the computer. Pretty amazing how much crap made it into a small laptop computer.

While not quite as fast as my MBP 2014 with OEM SSD, it's damn close and for $200, I'm sure this will get another 2+ years of life out of a computer that was becoming a real dog.

So if you are thinking of doing this to an older MBP, go for it!

Agree 100% gave me a brand new computer when I did the same to my 2012 MacBook Air.

You can also get rid of that dvd/cd drive if so equipped and put a hard drive caddy made to fill that space.

Yeah someone around here (not me) still wants the DVD/CD drive, but if it saves some weight I might be able to pitch it again - because the computer is still pretty hefty compared to my 2014 MBP and I don't think the DVD drive has been used in several years.

I did it with my aluminum shell MacBook. Night and day. It went from a completely worthless laptop to a decent laptop with a worthless battery.

What's a good source of parts for a battery replacement?

I bought all the stuff on Amazon, for the battery the Husan branded replacement got great reviews (with a lot of reviews), so I just went with that.

It came with the screwdrivers to take off the bottom of the computer, which was nice even though I probably had small bits that would have fit.

Battery replacement was easy, simply take the back off, unplug it and take the two screws out, pull the old out and in with the new.

The battery only replacement is a 5-10 minute DITY swap, with half of that setting all the screws aside in order to make it easy putting them back in (multiple lengths, etc).

I've always had good experience with Other World Computing.
