Smoked cocktails, what wood choice? Login/Join

I enjoy a smoked old fashioned or Manhattan from time to time, and bought a cheap little device to use at home a while back. It came with 4 small tins of wood chips (pecan, oak, cherry, and apple) to use. I’ve tried both the apple and cherry, fairly disappointed with them, and got a chemical type smell with the cherry. I’d like to source some higher quality chips, but unsure where from or what type. For any of you who smoke cocktails at home, what do you use? Thanks!

"Smoked cocktails?" I getcha! I'm told that you want to buy buds rather than stems and seeds.

I was gifted a Whisky Smoker kit for Christmas by my Granddaughter. I have not had opportunity to use it yet, so I am no help to you, sorry.

Best regards,

Wife got me a nifty little one called Smokeshow Cocktail Smoker. Look them up on YouTube. Simple to use and the results have been great. I don’t use it a whole lot but we enjoy smoked bourbon and rum drinks. Something that was completely unexpected was when we smoked some eggnog at Christmas, tasted like burnt marshmallows like you’d get over a campfire, it was really nice.
Doesn’t take many wood chips, less is more. Kit came with 8 wood smokes and they’ll last me a life time. I use hickory and bourbon barrel the most.

I'd go for "light" woods

Should be good to go:
Fruit woods
Oak
Pecan

Maybe:
Maple

Avoid:
Mesquite
Hickory
Cedar

this is mostly based on how I will smoke different meats, as I've not smoked cocktails but heavy smoke flavors will be acrid in liquid and light flavored meat.

Try an already smoked whisky? Something like a sherried Kilchoman or Bunnahabhain. IMHO.

Different sort of smoked, but a nice peeted Whisky is lovely.

Agreed, different flavor profile for sure. I was kind of being facetious, however a sherried Islay does make a very tasty manhattan.

For what OP is actually wanting I'd go with either straight oak or maybe apple wood. Oak being the preference.
