OK, I'm baffled. Not that that's all that hard, but...

Found this in a drawer in the office. In a nice plastic sleeve... So I'm guessing it came with something else, maybe, as an accessory?

I'm willing to bet one (or more!) of our members not only knows what this is, but what it's for and/or what it might have come with.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Then this tool/implement/whatsit will be given its proper location, rather than the 'miscellaneous drawer' which is its alternate resting place.

Looks like something you might be able to use to remove staples and / or open envelopes.

Thanks! That makes complete sense. I'm considerably less baffled and it's still early in the day Smile

Google Lens was completely baffled also (it clearly was not either a knife or a fountain pen!) but SIGforum to the rescue once again.

The gap in the middle of the metal (staple remover) end seems overdone for just prying staples. Is there functionality for that gap? Maybe taking out thumbtacks? Or something more utilitarian?

its so you can go after one leg at a time for those really tough ones. I've had to do this when reupholstering furniture.

Amazon has some similar ones. I have not checked, but I bet that the big office supply stores like Staples and Office Depot have them, as well.

I’m going out on a limb here but I think it’s for opening letters and removing staples?

Just a guess…

It works fine if you sharpen the end.

Surely you've seen stapled paper before, no? Measurements would confirm this, but it seems to me it's designed to go after BOTH legs at the same time! Just Sayin' Wink

That is for pulling out thumb tacks. That is why the metal end has the gap.

They were common in the graphic arts biz back in the day too since you didn't want to risk the piece you worked on being torn pulling up tape.

Mother was an architect and somewhere around here I still have hers that I used when I was a graphic artist, nigh on 40 years ago.

^^ Unless of course it is ALSO designed to go under/through both bent leg loops of staple, and lift/straighten them at the same time with one single motion.

Perhaps it's a 'Combination Letter Opener/Staple Remover/Thumb Tack Puller Tool' Razz
