smlsigHow far below ground is the Fordow Nuclear facility in Iran?
I keep reading people spout off a bunch of nonsense and the range is ridiculous, anywhere from 50 meters to almost a mile…
Does anyone know or have a solid source?
Thanks.

gearhoundsIsrael has complete air superiority; simply keep dropping bunker busters until they punch through.

GustoferWould it not be a better option to send an assault team (or six) in to destroy it from the inside? Blow it up real good and seal all the entrances.

That's what I've been expecting with President Trump keeping the US B2/MOP option as a last resort if the ground assault doesn't work. If it works, the Israelis get the credit for another brilliant operation and we don't get the blame.

IF Israel has complete air superiority that does sound like a better option. I wonder how long an operation like that would take to plan? and execute?
Maybe that's why we haven't yet sent in the US B2s.

architectIran has many ancient tunnels under its mountains used to bring water to towns and villages in desert areas. They are called qanats (pronounced: khwa nauts). I used to explore these when I was living there as a teenager (dad's diplomatic assignment). They go on for miles, and, although somewhat narrow (a typical qanat is about 2' wide and 6' tall), could easily be widened to accommodate a nuke lab. So the idea of these facilities being miles deep is not unlikely. And the depth will vary depending on the cover terrain.
I think the best argument for a ground entry rather than bunker busters is that the former will gather evidence, even if just photographic, of the Iranians progress in achieving their stated goal, might be useful when follow-up action is required.
This will not be the last time the Iranians will have to be persuaded to mind their manners.

That was "Iron Eagle II", but we don't have the Russians to help us this time. Plus, Louis Gossett, Jr. is dead.

Look at what is in the northwest corner of the facility. I bet if you kill that transformer yard, the centrifuges will self-destruct.
In the northeast corner, is the facility's water and wastewater treatment plants. Kill those and now living and working there is way harder.

Exactly! So we have figures here from 70 meters/ 300 feet all the way to over 2600 feet…
If it was the former then I would think we have the capability to destroy it but half a mile?? IDK.
I have a family member in the intelligence community that I’m sure knows but I also know that they won’t tell me…

Google says that that is Natanz. I assume they are two different places.
On a humorous note, Google's label in the map says, "Natanz Nuclear Facility - Temporarily closed".
