I love Notre-Dame de Paris. I've been there at least a dozen times and never get tired of seeing it. In less than ten days the family and I will be back in France. We won't be spending any time in Paris though so unfortunately I won't get to visit the Cathedral this time. Looking forward to when it will finally be reopened.

Did they ever determine who (or what) caused the fire?

I was in Madrid when the fire happened, quite the tragic sight.
Good to see things are progressing with the old lady, hope it all goes to schedule and they can celebrate its reopening soon.

Google Fu says, no, lots of conjecture, finger pointing, innuendo, anything from construction work to new electronic bells installed in that tower.....

Not that I can see

There were a couple theories:

1. Worker's cigarette (they all still smoke like crazy over there compared to the US)
2. Worker's welding or other hot work
3. Arson caused by ?

That article about the trees being used is pretty fascinating, I had heard that they were going to look at South America for some alternative hardwoods or even use modern materials like steel and concrete instead but it looks like they decided to go with all oak and from France:

quote:

The shape of the original beams salvaged from the devastating fire are long and narrow, indicating they had grown in a dense, competitive environment, the French national research centre told sciencemag.org. That means the trees were purposely reserved or farmed for the cathedral about 100 years before they were needed.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced in 2020 that the old 96-metre lead-coated spire would be reconstructed as originally designed by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. And so began the hunt for 1,000 oaks that would be needed to rebuild it and the frame of the cathedral’s transept. The balance of the 1,000 trees not brought from Bercé will be harvested from public lands and through private donations across the country.

The 12th century electrical system failed. It wasn't up to modern power demands.

It doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to figure out who (not what) caused the fire. The same thing that caused the dozens of other church fires in France, the dozens throughout Europe, and the nearly 100 across Canada.

What crazy conspiracy are you trying to point to? That fire was caused by a dumbass construction worker or electrical short by all accounts and evidence.

Boy, there must be a whole lot of careless construction workers across Canada and Europe. Believe what you want.

There’s a great documentary ( Nat geo I think?) that shows the rebuild of the roof and how they went to some old growth forests and got timbers from the same area as the ordinal and brought in craftsmen from around the world to fix it.

Just as an information sidebar, when making one of my several visits to Nikko [Japan] a few years back, I was told by one of the Tokyo University historians fellas in my party that all the huge tree trunks I could see stockpiled along one particular route were specially imported from Oregon, where such huge timbers were the norm, Apparently the US Forestry Service trade branch has special dispensation for the wood to go to Japan with the bark intact, after fumigation, of course.

I'm a stupid conservative fuck. Please enlighten me personally Gustofer. Take me from point A->B->C->D->Cathedral Burned. Be specific. Won't be hard, easy peasy.
