Iowa on Friday became the latest state to enact a voter-ID law to protect the integrity of its election process, and the state’s elected leaders are already bracing for a legal challenge seeking to invalidate that law before it can go into effect next year.

Gov. Terry Branstad, a Republican who is the longest-serving governor in the nation, signed the legislation into law on May 5. The bill, House File 516, specifies voter-identification requirements to cast a ballot in elections, shortens the time period for early voting, and updates the state’s absentee-voting procedures.

Voters without proper identification may still cast a provisional ballot on Election Day, which must be later authenticated before the ballot can be tabulated and added to the vote total.

The law also reduces the window for early voting in the Hawkeye State from 40 days to 29 days.

More than 30 states currently have some form of voter-ID law, and legal experts believe the Supreme Court is likely to take another case soon to clarify which voter-ID requirements pass legal muster.

Proud to be from Iowa today! We'll see how long it lasts.

I voted in a local bond election last week. Every time I walk into the poll booth lately and vote without showing any ID, it makes me feel like I'm cheating or committing a crime. I'm not sure why. At any rate, it will be a privilege to show my ID next time I vote.

I'm sure some Oblamer appointee will be along to claim it's "unconstitutional". Despite the fact that to enter said "judge's" courtroom one would need to present ID and pass through a scanner.

Great Job Iowa.

We need more states to adopt this "common sense measure" to ensure the vote is genuine.

In Texas they keep throwing road blocks up to overturn our law here.

If we have additional states to point to as working successfully that will help, thanks Iowa!

This is good news (and common sense). With Gorsuch on the bench, it might survive Democrat attacks.

legal challenge seeking to invalidate that law before it can go into effect Mad

These judges always think they can overturn the will of the people.
Voter ID is VERY important in preventing voter fraud.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
