Internal combustion engine, electric motor. Cars actually have both of these.
So far I don't ever remember hearing "electric engine."
But, the english language is complex, and lots of things are technically correct.
That is why laws must be so carefully written.

I didn't vote because it's not a settled matter. I was taught that engines were based on combustion cycles and motors were electrical in nature (although there are water and hydraulic motors, as well). A large portion of the public uses "motor" for almost any device that converts energy to motion, however.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned motorcycles.
Edit to add. Missed the post on the first page. Thanks trapper189.
I learned how to work on internal combustion engines. And most motors are electric. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Patrick-SP2022,

Considering the likely context of the discussion, I voted "engines." But most are correct in their discussions: modern cars have both.

Good point! Could it be that those names came from the verb form -- "motoring?" (Especially least for the older companies like Ford....)
God bless America.

I don't think this one was ever said to have a motor. Gentlemen. Start your motor engines!

Well, it is a motor car...

First page, 5th post.
So, motor car, motorcycle, motorboat, and a trimotor airplane all featuring ICEs long before their electric motor counterparts. Let us not forget the motor home or motor scooter either. Many kick start motorcycles don't have an electric motor nor do pull start outboard motors.

Awww crap!! And this is why I can't seem to be able to stop drinking!!!
(And that would be drinking beverages that contain alcohol for the purists that are among us.)

My Tundra has both. An engine for the drive train.
Several motors including my adjustable headlight levelers (2), the AMP Powersteps (2), the adjustable removable face plate of my aftermarket HU (1) and probably more I don't even know about.

I tend to use "engine" and "motor" for the powerplant interchangeably.

Many ships are diesel electric, meaning propulsion is provided by an electric motor. If you ever took a cruise, you very likely were on a ship with a "motor" for propulsion.
Beyond that, there are hundreds of electric motors on ships that do all sorts of things.

I am learning so much about semantics from SF. This is what I should have said:
I don’t want to be on a ship with [just] a motor.

I use engine as a noun, and motor as a verb.
