Last summer we went to DC for a 4 day getaway with our 10 year old and we had a blast.

Looking for another short trip this summer and are considering Houston for the space center and other sites and wanted to get the forum's advice on some things since I know we have some Texas members.

- Is the first week of June already sweltering typically and unsuitable for outdoor activities?
- Are there any good hotels, or rentable condos with 2 bedrooms (or any other lodging ideas)?
- What other sites should we plan on seeing other than the space center?
- Can you get away with just rideshare and taxi or is everything spread out too far (only been there once for work)?

Any other commentary is welcome!

Well I never expected it, but going down to Galveston proved to be a lot of fun with our daughter at that age. Schlitterbahn, horse rides on the beach, and the amusement pier.

Houston in the summer! Whoo, boy!

Hell itself would be cooler. Houston is overbuilt; concrete for days, subject to the Heat Island Effect. All that moist Gulf air. Son!

Not to mention, in the nearly forty years since I lived there, the crime rate has gone into the stratosphere.

I just wouldn't, but if you do, Collector's Firearms is a must.

It'll be hot, that's almost a given.
It's currently 6:30p & it's 90* at 58% humidity.

I'm on the far north side of town. Can't comment too much on the south side, but know we have a few members here on that side of town.

Space Center Houston is good for at least a half day of you take your time. Lone Star Floght Museum is nearby as well, IIRC.
I've grown pretty unfond of our zoo. It's a great attraction, but you almost have to get there when the gates open & be ready to be done by noon-ish, or it just gets too crowded.
Kemah has some good restaurants & Galveston has The Strand, lots of shops.

I haven't been since they moved, but the old [original?] location was a great browse. Took us a couple hours to peruse our way through it. And the staff was all fantastic as well. One of the guys is/was a member on here. Username is escaping me at the moment.

I was born in TX, lived here my whole life. Having said that, I wouldn’t go on vacation to Houston, in the summer, if the entire shit was for free! I don’t care if it was a free 4 seasons hotel, free flight, Lamborghini free rental. Hell no. Hell hath no fury like Houston in the summer.

The new location is YUUUUUGE, at least 3 times as big as the old place, and it's like a museum because they have an incredible number of antique firearms. The last time I went there was December 2022, with member straightshooter1, when he was in town visiting his daughter. Saw one that was "used to shoot Crazy Horse".

About the member who worked there, I think it's raggedhole.

Oh yeah, Houston and summer, it's murder for outdoor activities... It's not the heat itself, but coupled the humidity, that will kill you.

That's the one, raggedhole. Been many years since I've been in there. Need to make the trip to the new store.

I just checked my weather app. Right now Houston is already 76% humidity, in May. Tuesday it will be 99 degrees, in May Big Grin

Galveston or Padre Island. Hell with Houston proper.

Several years ago, on the tail end of the 'rona we drove down to visit wife's aunt in Dallas and then did several days in Corpus Christi and Padre Island, that was Spring Break time though. I can handle a St. Louis summer, but I don't go south of MO in the summer, life's too short for that humid hell.

USS Lexington was a blast. I've now toured three Essex Class carriers. (Yorktown and Hornet were my others).

Skip Houston and consider going out to Montana if you like the outdoors. You can get a Airbnb outside of Yellowstone and visit the park for the entire time you're there along with Grand Tetons. The weather will be much more comfortable than sweltering in Houston dealing with all that humidity.

Bring a machete. Not for protection, but to cut your way through the humidity.

This.

I used to say if you stood too long in Houston in summer, moss would grow on the north side of your leg.

If you feel compelled to visit Houston, go sometime between November and February. Occasionally there’s a nice day to be outside during that period. My sister lives there, and I go over for Christmas and spend a couple days with her, every ten years or so. That’s how long it takes to forget how much I dislike the place.

We were just down there a few weeks ago. If you do decide to go and are looking for a place to stay, I highly recommend this Airbnb. It was one of the best we’ve ever stayed in.
