I drive an ‘04 CTD which has 8 lug hole rims. I don’t know if the gas trucks use them, but I would think any HD 2500/3500 would. My truck was in for front end work for a few days last week, one of the things he found was that one of my rims was rotted through and in danger of separating from what would have been left on the hub. I would never have noticed it. My others aren't as bad, but on their way, so check yours. The rims are steel in construction but have that bullshit chrome cladding on the outside surface. I guess over the years crap has collected, got thrown to the outer rim, and stayed there. Pretty dangerous.

Wow! That is not good.
Although I do not have it any longer, my 16 1500 had the chrome clad wheels. Definitely a good thing for people to watch out for.


Because son, it is what you are supposed to do.

My 2000 2500 has the factory aluminum wheels. A few years ago I pulled the plastic center caps and observed a corrosion ring where the plastic cap met the wheel surface. Not just discoloration but actual corrosion. So I tossed the center caps, cleaned the corrosion, but could not remove the ring. The story I received from a trucking company owner, Was welcome to the new liquid deicing spray the state (Iowa at the time) is now using. Even periodic washing the truck in the winter may not remove this liquid salt? solution completely accumulation points. He said they use steam pressure washing to minimize the effects, but even that does not completely clean all the areas where this stuff can accumulate.

I havent used my center caps in years just because I find then a pita to keep clean. They've got to come off to look 1/2 way good and
I dont have time for that.

Interesting. EXACT same thing happened with my wife’s PT cruiser. Have replaced all 4 wheels over the last few years. Seemed to happen around year 10. Could not really figure out a long term fix other than when I rotate tires I hose the wheel down with anti corrosion stuff like fluid film

This title should really read "PSA for the guys driving 10+ year old vehicles"

Especially if you're in Northern areas with lots of winter salt or other deicing compounds.

Not limited to just Dodge Rams.
