I disagree. I don't like relying on rechargeable flashlights. I like knowing if the flashlight dies, I can quickly change the battery and be back in business. I carry spare AA and AAA batteries in my Jeep and in my carry-on when I travel. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

The best flashlight to get is one that uses a rechargeable battery but can also run on AA, AAA, or 123’s in a pinch. It’s truly the best of both worlds. I agree that buying a proprietary rechargeable that doesn’t interchange with one of the common types I mentioned above is less than ideal.

Streamlight MicroStream. I keep these around the house, gear bag etc. with lithium batteries for longevity, options to replace the battery easily vs recharge and less chance of a leak. Better for travel like was mentioned above by Balze. I have since switched to a Streamlight MicroStream rechargable setup for EDC to go bright first and then less bright on a second rapid press. They make two versions, a black and a coyote color. The black version comes on low first then high, and the coyote comes on high first then low. 250 lumen high, 50 lumen on low. It's a good idea to have options. Nothing wrong with having flashlights that take rechargeable batteries. Additional rechargeable batteries for the Microstream USP are available for $7-8 each and can be changed out in seconds if that is a concern. For day to day use, I'll never go back to disposable batteries. I have a couple of the USB charging models and they do taper the light output prior to quitting. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. I didn't realize that the rechargeable model had easily replaceable batteries. Good suggestions all around. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

Yep fairly cheap. The problem is it’s not a standard 10440 and can’t fall back on a standard AAA if needed. The micro/macrostream USBs are great light though. "Guns are tools. The only weapon ever created was man."

Their website shows four versions: black and coyote, which you described, and also a red and a blue. For the red and the blue, there is no mention of sequence -- whether the high or low intensity comes on first. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

While it may be so, I find it difficult to believe that Streamlight would have different switch sequences for the same model of light in different finishes.

When I saw Riley's post about that, I looked at the Streamlight website. The switch sequences for the black and coyote models are documented there, just as Riley posted. There is no mention of the sequences for the red and blue models, which are newer (later releases) than the original black and coyote models. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Another fan of the Fenix lights. Here is a link to their pocket carry items. https://fenix-store.com/collections/compact-lights I've carried their TK-series lights when I worked security in the past. I bought two of the following and gave one to a friend when he became a reserve officer for a local agency. https://fenix-store.com/collec...-tactical-flashlight He told me they were out one light looking for someone - he was up on the ridge and put the light in high power - got a number of comments similar to "where is all that light coming from?". They thought he had brought out a bigger light. On this one, the battery has a USB-C port on the side for recharging.

You guys are overthinking this. You want ANY rechargeable battery that is capable of being swapped with a battery that you keep around the house. That means a rechargeable that can be swapped with a AA battery, a AAA battery, or a 123 which would be my last choice. If your battery dies the best case scenario is swapping in a AA or AAA battery with a loss on performance due to battery capacity but it will work. Buying a light that has some random proprietary battery is a losing proposition. Years ago choices were limited. Today, they are not. Use a rechargeable that swaps our easily with a double or triple A battery. Don’t overthink this is my advice.

The Microstream is cute, like a baby bunny, but it's specs are pretty much crap, especially in AAA form. The high bright level drops off very fast after it's turned on to about half of the initial brightness and then it starts a fairly sharp decline until it poops out. It's a poorly regulated light and Streamlight offers much better. It's all in the Fact Sheets under each light. A duel fuel light is the best option since most can run either a rechargeable and 123a batteries or a single AA and also 123a too. If the OP will consider a AA light, this one from Streamight is the Protac 1L-1AA light. It runs on 123a or AA. The runtime on a lithium AA (it takes alkaline or lithium) is twice of the alkaline at a very high regulated lever and both outclass the 123a but you get options. The Fact Sheet lists all the runtimes. They also make it in a right angle too. I have that and it's smaller than you think. Streamlight AA light

Chances are he will find his phone that was dropped under the seat and once he gets the fire put out he will be good to go. Another light I just thought of that I have been happy with and have stashed around is the Streamlight Protac 1 aaa. https://brightguy.com/product/...tactical-flashlight/ Light can easily be setup for high only. Good runtimes with a Lithium Aaa. "Guns are tools. The only weapon ever created was man."

My Protac 1L-1AA light is a great light. I love how I can use a CR123 or AA battery. For me, as an everyday carry flashlight, the Microstream USB is the better choice. It's smaller, lighter and very handy, especially when carried using the supplied lanyard. It's always on me but stays out of my pocket and out of sight most of the time. I do wish Streamlight could find a way to make it shoot 15 rounds of 9mm +p. That would make it perfect.
