Ouch - fell out of bed

konata88Ouch - fell out of bed
Fell out of bed while sleeping. Usually can catch myself. But this time, I was already on the floor when I woke up.
Banged the upper edge of my eye pretty bad - right at the bone of the eye above the nose. Nice little 3/4" gash that bled nicely. I used tissue to absorb and stop the bleeding. Direct pressure for about 10-15 minutes and the bleeding stopped.
Note to self: buy a lot more sterile gauze and keep in handy place for immediate use. I have a little gauze in a zipped up trauma kit in the kitchen. Not enough / convenient.
Pretty nice bump and bruise. I was wondering whether it warranted a trip to the ER for stitches. Since the bleeding stopped, I opted for a bandage and tetanus shot in the morning. Nurse took a quick look and thought it's probably okay w/o stitches. But if it opens up again, I may go to urgent care to take another look.
My learning - it's not enough to just have some stuff. You need enough of the stuff you need. You can go through gauze pretty quick for a good bleed. And it needs to be someplace convenient and quick. No time for searching and playing with zippers and stuff. I need to a better way to keep this stuff at home. Nice easy open, clear sided container.....

JWFOr maybe bed rails.

Just another day in paradise.

Gauze is good. Paper towels work well too though for a surface laceration. Not to mention t shirt rags. Don’t be afraid to improvise.
ETA: sorry you went through this, hope it heals up quickly. Sometimes a butterfly bandage or two can help help stuff pulled together.

That’s the funniest thing I’ve read all day!
In all seriousness maybe put a pillow between you and the edge of the bed to make it harder to roll out.

But only for four hours.
After that, you'll need to pee to bad to stay in bed.

P210When my grandson who sometimes does that visits I put a pool noodle under the bottom sheet along the outside edge of the bed. Works.

P220 SmudgeGlad it didn't go worse than that, and I hope it heals up nice without stitches. Eyebrows love to split.
Did that about a year ago, but was conscious enough to catch the edge of the bed frame and then the floor with the tip of my left elbow on the way down. We have a high bed. I'm not a little guy. I seriously thought I had at least fractured it and went in for x-rays. Bad bone bruise that took months to heal up decently, but thankfully, no break.
I sleep with a pillow under my arm now, which supports my damaged shoulders and helps keep me from rolling out. It works.

BassamaticTuck the sheet in really well on the side you sleep on, then go around and get into bed on the other side. Problem solved...you're welcome.

rburgI sleep with 3 pillows. One on the cliff side, one under my head, and the last on the side where my wife sleeps. Kind of like a coffin. Just like I was in a funeral home.

NismoI remember as a kid, staying over at my Grandparent's place, my Grandpa would line up a few table chairs seat side against the bed so I won't roll off.

mcrimmWe recently replaced our traditional mattress with a Casper foam mattress. The edges are soft and don’t support you like a traditional mattress. About the second day we had it, my wife rolled out onto the floor. She wasn’t hurt but it sure was funny.

together.
Could you also please get a mattress pad for the floor next to your bed so IF you fall out again —- there is a buffer. Hopefully no need for additional gauzes or stitches...

ZSMICHAELI rolled out of a high bed once onto a tile floor. My ribs hurt for five months. It was unpleasant. As a kid I freqently rolled out of the top bunk even with the guard rail. It hurt less when I was six.

egregoreI have never fallen out of bed. I'm sure I would know if I had. I have dozed, come a little close to the edge a couple of times and been startled awake before falling. What I'm getting at is
why did you fall out of bed? If this has been or becomes a trend, maybe you ought to see a sleep specialist.

flashguyI'm sorry you were injured, and glad it wasn't worse.
I sleep in a lounge chair, semi-reclined, so it's not an issue with me.
