Are there mouthwashes that actually help prevent the formation of dental plaque? (Several types make that claim, but claims are claims.) If so, any specific ones you recommend? ► 6.0/94.0 “I can’t give you brains, but I can give you a diploma.” — The Wizard of Oz

I use the purple 2x a day and have my teeth cleaned every 3mo and I can’t tell the difference. My dental people say to use a water pick and the green mouth wash. I have periodontal disease so ….

OK, here's a subject that I could use some enlightening. A while back I started researching mouthwashes, became perplexed, and quit. What I found was: Alcohol-based mouthwashes are bad for you, b/c they kill off the healthy bacteria in your mouth as well as the unhealthy. Non-alcohol-based mouthwashes work better in maintaining your oral health, but they also turn your teeth yellow. Is there an option that keeps your mouth healthy, makes your breath smell fresh, and doesn't discolor your teeth?

My hygienist told me no mouthwash, instead brush and floss often. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Thanks, Patriot; the sort of meaningful response I was hoping for. ► 6.0/94.0 “I can’t give you brains, but I can give you a diploma.” — The Wizard of Oz

I don’t know – I don’t use mouthwash. My solution is to visit my dentist quarterly. Usually I just see the hygienist for cleaning. At the hygienist‘s advice I switched to an electric toothbrush. I like this one with a built-in battery. It lasts about 3 months. https://a.co/d/dGxO92f P. S. The hygienist did NOT suggest using a mouthwash of any sort. P. P. S. Another advantage of those quarterly visits: My dentist’s office is just a short block west of the San Diego Chicken Pie Shop. Serious about crackers.

I like the Therabreath Icy Mint. It's a vigorous mint but without the burn from most other mouthwash. I believe it helps a little with plaque but more so with keeping the ick in check. I also use their toothpaste most of the time. “That’s what.” - She

So I have used this in the past: Chlorhexidine Your dentist may sell it out of their office. It is a prescription mouthwash and in my opinion, works wonders on the gums and breath.

When I was working, I remember my dentist once telling me I need to brush my teeth for at least two minutes a day. I told her flat out I don't have time for that. Once I retired and having to pay for all my dental treatments out of pocket, I figured I had the time. So, the outer vertical teeth walls each get as much time as it takes me to count to 15 slowly. 15 count on the lower left teeth, 15 count on the upper left teeth, then 25 count on the upper inner right teeth, another 25 count on the lower inner right teeth, 15 count on the lower outer right teeth, 15 count on the upper outer right teeth, switch to the inner left teeth, 25 count on each upper and lower set. Then 15 count on the front teeth. Switch to up and down brushing on the outer left half to front and another 15 count on the outer right half to front. Last I do is my tongue. The hygienist has remarked how clean my teeth are of plaque. One thing she recommended was to use CloSYS mouthwash. I also use a water pik after each meal and floss. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
