A is oil change. 6 is rear differential oil change. Why would I need a rear differential oil change at 8200 miles? I was quoted $127 by the stealership. Seems a little bit much and a lot too soon. Opinions? | ||

Mark, FWIW, Honda's a known to get a growl sound when the rear diff oil isn't changed at about 20k miles. I think you're fine at 8200, but keep in mind to change it when the time comes. Is that the standard service interval for the differential, or just the initial interval. I would guess that the short initial interval is because they use some form of assembly/ break in lubricant, and that they replace it with the normal differential oil at this time. Honda wants it done early for the first change. After that, it goes to a more normal interval. Rear diffs on these cars do need their special synthetic fluid changed, but it's more like 50,000 miles. These diffs freewheel until wheel spin is detected, then lock in (i.e., couple the axle shafts) electrically, and sometimes shudder in turns if the fluid degrades. Unless the owner's manual says different, I don't know why they would need any "break-in" oil when nothing else has it. Reset the monitor and forget it. Should you need this service, it's a simple drain & fill. Buy the fluid from Honda. You'll need a little pump for the filling. | |||

If it's under warranty I would service it at the recommended intervals and keep the receipts. No proof of maintenance is the easy button for denying a warranty claim if you ever need it. Two quarts of Honda Dual Pump Fluid II is about $30, then a $6 pump and a couple bucks for crush washers. | |||

I think you are right the first is 15,000 miles then every 30,000. I have a 2019 crv with a 1.5 engine. Bought it used and I remember looking up services and that one being done earlier the first time. I'm pretty sure the OP is reading the codes on the Maintenance minder. And it for sure says change the rear diff with a 6. So I would change the rear diff. I don't see anything in the manual that overides the maintenance minder in this area. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.” | |||
