Yes I remember it, duck and cover, (more like bend over and kiss your ass good bye). I lived within 30 miles of 2 working Air Force bases so in a major target area, also close to a ship yard.

Active duty USAF in Strateic Air Command. Interesting time.

I was 12 and remember it well.

I was in HS and we practiced getting under desks or hiding in the hallways. Our old and wise shop teacher gave us some very frank info on the possibility of a nuclear war.

I was four. I don't remember anything about it. I suppose my parents shielded me from whatever I might have understood anyway.

I was 13. Knew something was going but did not really understand all of it or what happened afterwards.

Same here. 4 years old at the time and I don't remember anything about it either.

I remember it,I was 10 years old, but do remember all the TV and radio,newspaper .

I was in 4th grade at the time.
We only practiced "Tornado" drills where we went into the hallway and crouched along the windowless walls.

Although we were aware of the situation, as kids we more interested in the upcoming Halloween party.

I was a month shy of being five years old. As such, I wasn't aware, nor do I remember anything specific about it. I do recall my dad keeping a pile of "camping supplies" down in the basement.

I remember my dad and uncle building a bomb shelter in our basement. We used it for tornado shelter for years.

I was 18, I remember it well.

I was a freshman in college and it was pretty much a non-event in my life.

I was 12 and remember it well. We lived on a military street with mostly NIKE Site personnel. Like hiding under a desk would be beneficial. It was an interesting point in history.

There was a Bay Area personality, can't remember the name, did some subbing on radio talk shows, he had a Ph.D. in some engineering field, worked at Lawrence Livermore Labs at the time. He tells of being whisked away clandestine fashion to an underground US nuclear missile site, where he was one of those with his finger on the button, merely waiting for orders. He was convinced at the time he would never see his family again. When all was over he was returned, again clandestine fashion, to hid workplace. He says it took him a week before he sobered up after that.

Since when have we ever had civilians manning missile launch controls? Scoutmaster, this story about some Lab scientist doesn't pass the smell test.

I agree. It’s actually ridiculous to believe that some civilian scientist would suddenly be put in the position to launch nuclear weapons.

I was stationed at Sheppard AFB. We were on alert. Had a XNavy SEAL there that reupped in the AF and he was notified to be ready to be called back.

I had fulfilled my six year contract -- four years regular Navy plus two years reserve -- five months earlier, and had been discharged.

I kept wondering if I was going to be called back. I was a missile (Regulus) guy.

I was 15 at the time and I remember my father saying that the neighbors that had fallout shelters built were nuts because we lived close to a SAC bomber base that was ground zero for multiple warheads. He said we would be incinerated in a split second but the people in their shelters would suffer a slow and agonizing death. It kind of took the scare out of the equation.
