Hello.

Being that I am in the People’s Republic of Canada, carrying a firearm is not an option here.

On top of that, I suffer from gout.

On top of that, there’s snow on the ground for 8 months a year.

What say the SF hivemind about canes for SD?

(No, cane swords are not an option. Has to be a cane-cane).

Thanks in advance!

I think I'd find some martial artist teacher who teaches stick fighting, or whatever it's called. Then I select a cane or walking stick best suited for that. Then I'd have him teach me how to use it.

Look up Declan Casey on Facebook.

He makes Blackthorn shillelaghs long enough to be walking sticks.

Me made mine to my 43.5 inch length request. He sent it to me within two weeks of ordering it. To order I sent him a message using Facebook Messenger, and he sent me a PayPal link.

My stick is a perfect fit to me; cost about $250.00 US which included shipping.

You can also look at Ye Olde Shillelagh Shop online. Liam there is also a renowned stick maker.

Maybe ask him what kind of cane he reccomends before buying.

This.

Look into filipino martial art arts.
Kali, Kali Escrima, Escrima, Arnis.
All pretty much the same, the name comes from what valley / island you live on.

Once you figure it out, you’ll be able to substitute the stick for a knife or open hand.

A teacher I found here --https://canemasters.com gave me a bit of instruction. He brought an assortment of canes with him. I bought one of their moderately priced canes from the training series. Very sturdy, goes every place that I go, even where I can not carry a firearm.

The instructor noted that I was armed. He said that he carries a handgun too, but the cane is already in his hand, he does not have to take time to draw it from concealment.

The cane that I bought is similar to this one:

Trekking poles with carbide tips. You can even carry them on planes if used as medical assistance device. Mine are 48" long.

I’m going to make one with an aluminum Hurst shifter handle for the grip. I think swinging that would cause the Bg some pain, disabling if you hit the right spot.

What do you gentlemen make of the Cold Steel cane?

The way Canadian economy is now (a stick of butter is $5; a flat of bacon is $9… and we pay half our wages in Federal, Provincial and Municipal taxes), I cannot justify spending more than $50, if I can help it.

Maybe a Shillelagh walking/fighting stick. Unleaded if that's not legal in Canada.

While they've got an obsession with meat filled boots, Cold steel is fine.

Two that Liam O'Caidhla made personally for me from Ye Olde Shillelagh. You see exactly what you'll get, and can usually customize the length (and any inscriptions if you want). Made in Shillelagh. Brass ferules and a removable rubber protective tip, a variety of thicknesses for walking or fighting. Seasoned 3-5 years and finished in the traditional manner, Irish Blackthorn is a very - VERY - tough wood, dense enough for defense or offense. They can also add weights (if permitted) but the stick itself was protecting the Irish for a few centuries now. Stick fighting is an art in itself, but even without extensive training, the fit in the hand (you can get left or right), the balance and the feel of these traditional sticks will provide plenty of comfort for anyone for whatever reason not carrying, traveling through the Valley of the Shadow facing opponents equal or lesser equipped. Not cheap, but worth every penny. And also useful for walking. Cool
