Pipe SmokerScientists sniff out why dogs´ noses are cold
“Dogs' noses are so cold because they are ultra-sensitive heat detectors, a new study has confirmed.
European researchers found that when the ambient temperature is 86°F (30°C), a dog's rhinarium – the bare end point of the nose – is some 5°C (9°F) cooler.
This helps breeds such as retrievers to detect very faint heat sources, such as the presence of a small mammal, from five feet away.”

Retrievers are amateurs compared to hounds. A hound can detect odors from down the block (assuming they're willing to get up that afternoon

).

My hound (before I lost her in the divorce) could detect small animals in the next county.... and would chase them there if I let her.

Incredibly well said!!!

.
Even in the dark of night, our two Yorkies always knew when there were rabbits in the backyard and the speed with which these two seniors would bolt out from the door chasing after the hapless poop machine, in utter silence, was nothing less than astounding!
Imagine two silent fighter jets in perfect unison racing across the yard just an inch off the ground and the "OH, SHIT!!!" look on the face of the rabbit as it finally gets its ass in gear to haul outta there just at the last possible moment

.

KenSI could have saved them some research. Dog noses are cold so they can poke the warmest part of me they can sense and wake me up at 0-dark thirty to go out and then beg for breakfast. The enhanced heat sensor and sense of smell is purely secondary. just sayin.

Okay, you win

There's a whole bunch of truth, right there, especially if you've ever had a Doberman in the family
