Neat photo in the article.

“LAUREL, Md. (AP) — A NASA spacecraft 4 billion miles from Earth yielded its first close-up pictures Wednesday of the most distant celestial object ever explored, depicting what looks like a reddish snowman.

Ultima Thule, as the small, icy object has been dubbed, was found to consist of two fused-together spheres, one of them three times bigger than the other, extending about 20 miles (32 kilometers) across.

NASA’s New Horizons, the spacecraft that sent back pictures of Pluto 3½ years ago, swept past the ancient, mysterious object early on New Year’s Day. It is 1 billion miles (1.6 billion kilometers) beyond Pluto…”

BTW – Iittala makes a neat glass named Ultima Thule.

I have two sets of Iittala glasses (both very neat), but not the Ultima Thule model.

Ultima Thule is also a very cool, long-running (since 1989) radio broadcast out of Australia. Available online as downloadable mp3, on Mixcloud.com and on PRX radio stations in the USA.

Thank you.

I watched online via YouTube the John Hopkins University Astro physics lab two part series on the new horizons spacecraft called “Summiting the solar system“.

Pretty neat and shows the mismanagement of the spacecraft right before Pluto that put all hands on deck to fix the screwup of sending Instructions to the craft while it was also compressing the large photos from Pluto to crash CPU number one. Complete bolo.

I was disappointed to learn that they miscalculated the position of Ultima Thule, a rock 4 billion miles from here, by 600 whole miles.

Shameful, really.

Representing, I believe, a .00000015% error. Can we not do better than that, I ask you? NASA has gone to the dogs....

^^^^^^
I figure it like this:
600 / 4,000,000,000 = 0.0000001.5
0.0000001.5 x 100 = 0.00001.5%
But I’ve been wrong before…

My bad, you're correct. 1/100,000th of a percent - that's even worse!

And to think, Wrong Way Corrigan missed California by a mare 31 hundred and 50 miles.

What interesting about Ultima Thule is that the object is pretty much unchanged from the first few moments (on a cosmic timescale) of the creation of our solar system, too far from the sun to be baked into different components. A pair of icy rocks smashed into each other, but rotated too slowly to spin apart again. I wonder what they'll find when all the telemetry is in.

Smashed together at 1 mph.

Also, “unchanged” is misleading as the red color indicates molecular compounds changed over time by radiation (kind of an oxidation-like process). There is a name for this but it escapes me at the moment; named for the guy that theorized/discovered it.

All that said, interesting stuff!

Yes, I should have said bumped together and fused.

Unchanged: "Unlike comets and other objects that have been altered by the sun over time, Ultima Thule is in its pure, original state: It’s been in the deep-freeze Kuiper Belt on the fringes of our solar system from the beginning."
