We bought our fridge about 10 years ago and it scraped the short cabinet above it going in. I want to redo the floor but there’s no room. I considered replacing the fridge but found barely a handful that fit what seems to be a typical size space when our place was built 25 years ago. Anyone else had this issue recently? It just seems like the manufacturing trend has changed to very tall fridges. Not ones made for stashing cereal boxes on top! I’ll probably have to completely remove that half cabinet. I could have 1 1/4 cut off the bottom but that doesn’t seem worth it since it only hides unused cookbooks.

That was actually the straw that broke the camel's beck for a kitchen remodel for me. The house we owned in New Mexico was built in 1945, and added onto at least twice. This would be a good segue into another rant about old houses.... Anyway, our fridge went bad, so we went shopping for a new one. Everything we could find (except for the tiny apartment-sized models) were taller than what was there. Short term, I took the Sawz-All to the top cabinet to make room for the new fridge. But I ended up remodeling the whole kitchen. In fairness, it was a project I wanted to do anyway, this had the advantage of allowing us to enjoy it before we ended up moving, instead of just doing it for the new buyer. Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet. - Dave Barry "Never go through life saying 'I should have'..." - quote from the 9/11 Boatlift Story (thanks, sdy for posting it)

Seem? No two ways about it, they’re taller. When we needed a new one 5 years ago, I found exactly one that would fit the space it needed to go in. Even then, I had to take the flooring out from under the fridge to gain 3/8” for it to fit. If I have to do it again, it’s going to be a lot more work to rework the cabinet above the fridge.

And! They need to start making kitchen cabinets as deep as these monster refrigerators. This business of refrigerators jutting out five ,six or seven inches farther than the cupboards is asinine. Depending on how the cabinet above the fridge is constructed you may be able to trim the piece that hangs down if it’s not structural. ------------------ Eddie Our Founding Fathers were men who understood that the right thing is not necessarily the written thing. -kkina

They’ve also gotten much deeper it seems. You now need to get a special “counter depth” model if you don’t want it sticking out like a foot.

I don't know but I'm curious. Does the heat from the fridge not need more room to vent out and away? Maybe a few inches on each side, back side, and top? .

The cabinet is vented in the back. The old refrigerator needed venting and I’m fairly sure this one did as well, but I think some of the newest ones do everything through the bottom plate.
