Mrs. Krazee needs an ultrasound on her gall bladder. This will be out of pocket. Just a quick glance reveals a range of $250-$700+. It looks like you book and pay through the mdsave website. I use goodrx all the time for prescriptions but procedures is another animal. I'm open to advice.

I used it for a chest xray. I ended up driving 60 miles to a hospital in a nearby town to get it, because it was a couple hundred dollars cheaper. It was easy to use, as I recall.

My insurance carrier, United Health Care (UHC), has a free pricing guide on their website and mobile phone app.

My spouse and I needed post-COVID CT scans and the hospitals charge was $980 apiece. We used the pricing guide and obtained the CT's for $198 apiece.

Hence I would check with your insurance carrier to see if they also offer a pricing service. The added plus is you can search for "in-network" providers too whereas if you use a 2nd party pricing service it won't tell you if the provider is in or out of network.

I took a look at the site. Discounts do not look that great. I would call the facility before committing any money. Does the ultrasound involve paying the radiologist to interepret the findings? Are you given a printed copy of the results or is this sent to your physician directly?

I'm 48 and I had my yearly physical in April. My mom had a colon cancer issue found very early when she was 68 or so. My doc and I talked about getting a colonoscopy just to be on the safe side. I have Cigna insurance and because I'm under 50 it's not covered. I checked prices on the Cigna website and there are several docs in the Denver area that will charge between $1,500 - $1,700 for the procedure.

Based on this thread I checked MDSave.com. The closest doctor to Denver listed on MDSave is 315 miles away and the cost is $2,121.

I'll go with Cigna if I choose to have it done.

It might be covered IF you have certain risk factors. BTW the new guideline is age 45, but do not count on Cigna to tell you that.

Cigna won't cover it at 48, I already asked.

Appeal to a higher authority at Cigna citing the new guidelines OR just pay up.
