maybe I don't understand here... doesn't the little spike on the bottom of the K-cup holder put a hole in the home-made filter?

or are you putting the home-made filter in something else and making a k-cup type of thing.

I'm sorry, should have been clearer. The home made paper filters are inserted into a plastic k-cup shaped basket that has a fine screen mesh filter built into it. This slows down the water as it passes through the basket and allows the water to absorb more flavor from the coffee grounds.
