Different strokes I guess . When I hear her version of " Me and Bobby McGee " it's like fingernails on a chalkboard . I have to turn it off .

Anybody here ever listened to Kimah Bob? I'll admit I may have misspelt her, name, but I can't be assed to look it up.

All I know is that she has THE most odd voice I've every heard outside a cartoon.

You and me both. The original is one of my favorite songs. Her version? Nope.

Vocal fry is often paired with “up talking” which is double annoying. It involves a rising inflection at the end of a sentence making every sentence sound like a question. Became fashionable for the younger set (males included) years ago.

I was also fond of Claudia Black's raspy voice in Farscape and SG1. It's her real voice unlike the examples here of those who fake it or smoke too much..

Edit: plus her Aussie accent..

I think it became more of a hit for those with estrogen poisoning as opposed to just younger people.

Miley does have the raspy quality, but she doesn't have other characteristics of vocal fry - the falling inflections at the end of sentences, and the tendency to make statements sound like questions. Maybe that is her actual voice, or maybe she is only partly vocal fry.

She had surgery last year for Reinke's edema. As someone dealing with throat and voice problems due to a medical issue, I honestly sympathize.

I always called it smoker's voice.

Nicks was great, but IMO Britney Spears way overdoes it.

Before I learned here that it was called vocal fry, I called it the "baby, baby" voice.

There are three different vocal affectations young women utilize today, any one of which irritates me, but which yield exponentially greater amounts of irritation when piled on one another:
1. upspeak or uptalk
2. drawl
3. vocal fry.
Upspeak is when each sentence ends on a syllable with a higher note - making it sould like a question. "WhatevER!"
Drawl is when the last syllable is drawn out. "Whateveeeerrrrr."
And vocal fry is - well - vocal fry.
I had the misfortune to deal with an associate attorney from another law firm pretty often several years ago, and she consistently uptalksed and drawled. I was positively vibrating after a meeting with her.
One day, she completed the triumvirate (I think she actually had a cold) and added an impossibly crinkly vocal fry. Fortunately, she left that law firm shortly thereafter or I would have been forced to kill her.

Brittany Spears really popularized the vocal fry many years ago. Meghan Trainor uses it today - and has had to cancel performances due to throat issues.
