Blackbeard’s flag to fly over NC state ferries.
I don’t think I like it. A government endorsing a flag of a murderer, thief, and outlaw...glorifying a pirate. How many people sailing those waters were terrorized by the sight of that flag?

MANNS HARBOR, N.C. (AP) — Ferries serving the North Carolina Outer Banks will be flying Blackbeard’s flag thanks to an agreement between two state agencies.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division has teamed with the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources with the idea, which marks the observance of the 300th anniversary of Blackbeard’s death in 1718.

The flag will fly on ferries serving the Hatteras-Ocracoke, Cedar Island-Ocracoke, and Swan Quarter-Ocracoke ferry routes, as well as the Pamlico River route between Bayview and Aurora. Both areas have historic ties to the 18th-century pirate.

The Blackbeard 300 Committee will be hosting exhibits, educational opportunities and events throughout 2018. The anniversary will wrap up at Blackbeard’s Pirate Jamboree in Ocracoke on Oct. 25-28.

So I’m guessing you’re not a fan of Talk Like a Pirate Day?

Just claim to be a minority and tell the WaPo you are offended.

Since it is not the more common skull and cross bones, I would guess that few people will know it is a pirate flag.

Chongo take a deep breath..its all done to promote tourism..there is so much history in that area and much of it is related to piracy I see this as a way to get people interested in the areas rich history.

We fly his flag on our house in Hatteras when we're down..

Remember...to err is human to arrrgg is pirate!

Yeah, nothing to get concerned about. The people Blackbeard terrorized and murdered are long since dead and who cares about how they got that way?

Now the Confederate battle flag on the other hand, that’s a different matter. Just think how upsetting it is to remember what it was like working in the cotton fields and seeing a column of troops marching under that banner going off to fight the forces of liberation that were coming down to end your involuntary servitude. I can imagine that those former slaves still wake up today from nightmares prompted by the sight of that oppressive flag. The passage of time is what it’s all about: If it happened a long time ago, it’s cool. (Mostly.)

I think they are all dead, just a guess.

I lived in Buxton for years, the Jolly Roger is about tourism, and nothing more. Frankly I’d be surprised if anyone outside of the OBX could even recognize Black Beards Ensign.

A pirate flag displayed on a government facility. You know, the government -- the ones that collect taxes.

At first blush, I wondered if the Jolly Roger wasn’t an invention of Hollywood meant to sell Errol Flynn movies. After looking further, it appears that pirates of the 1700’s did tend to fly a similar flag. This Scientific American article provides some insight. If I read it correctly there would be a number of variations of the pirate flag. Even at that, if NC is going to promote this flag, then how in the devil’s name do they condone banning the Confederate flag? Frankly, I have no problem with either flag, but banning them seems to be the PC future the Left wants us to all adhere to.

Doesn't bother me - they are just trying to keep NC's history alive.

In 1996, near Beaufort Inlet, they recovered artifacts which they conclude are from his flagship Queen Anne's Revenge.

The NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources has a website/webpage dedicated to Blackbeard. https://www.qaronline.org/

Oh, there’s no question that the flag is the same as what Blackbeard flew.

I guess I should lighten up. But I view it as something like US naval ships flying the Al Qaeda flag 300 years from now to promote interest in tourism and celebrate the history of Bin Laden.

Yeah. Flying the Nazi flag in Jerusalem to promote history is a bit off-putting.

However, in another 230 years, it might not be such a bad thing.

We celebrate Purim, which is the downfall of the Prime Minister of Persia, who sought to have all the people murder all the Jews by official decree.

And Jews today, the world over, dress up (similar as people do for Mardi Gras), party, tell "the Story of Esther and her Uncle Mordecai, and their selfish act in the face of death, to prevent the slaughter.

Lots of drinking and celebrating that we are alive, and those who seek to harm us are history.

Hogan's Heros, was a show that did the same thing. It celebrated the fact that the Nazis are dead and gone, by making buffoons out of the German protagonists. Many of the German Roles were Jewish, (Klink, Schultz, Hochstetter and Burkhalter.) and "The Cockroach" (prisoner LeBeau) and some had suffered loss and pain during or directly because of the Nazis and the Holocaust.

But HH was anything but celebration of Nazi Germany, but made fool of the Nazis, and showed that one must never give up, nor surrender in the face of evil. It was a "family favorite".

It was and is a favorite show. I got to meet Bob Crane, in 1967, he was in a parade in Baltimore MD, and my sister and I went up and started talking to him. (Jay North was there on his Elephant from the show "Maya" but we wanted to see "Col. Hogan") My sister touched his jacket to get his attention and he said: "Are you trying to steal my jacket?" We told him we liked the show, and he asked me "who's your favorite characters?", I told him. "The prisoners, and Sgt. Shultz". He talked with us for a few minutes, and then moved on.

I hope someone makes fun of ISIS in 300 years, if anyone will recall of them.

The only ban in NC I'm aware of is a Durham County school dress code ban on KKK symbols, swastikas, and the Confederate flag.

Durham also happens to be the only county in NC that requires residents to register handguns. Frown
