Personally I dislike "Greek" style yogurt because of its thick texture. All the ones I've read the ingredients of include pectin to artificially thicken it up to a pasty consistency. Read the ingredients and the sugar content on most store bought yogurt sometime! My favorite yogurt is what my friend makes herself a couple times a week from just whole milk with a bit of starter from the previous batch. I'm too lazy to make my own but I've found Dannon's plain yogurt which just has whole milk and enzymes to be pretty good, and inexpensive. I usually add just a bit of fruit or jelly.

Greek yogurt (in Greece, not what is advertised here as "Greek yogurt") is supposed to be thick, but it is not traditionally thickened by adding any kind of thickener. Rather, Greek yogurt is strained to get some of the water out to make it thicker. Typically, a little salt (like a teaspoon per quart) is added to help the water separate out - most of the salt comes out with the water.

Middle Eastern labneh is made the same way, but is often strained much longer - sometimes to the consistency of cream cheese.

That method is not really large-scale industrial food production friendly, so a lot of the giant food companies just add crap to it to approximate the right consistency.

I enjoy Greek yogurt. More so than Dannon or other brands.

Greek yogurt (not Greek Style) is pretty much the only yogurt I'll eat. Don't have it often but as a substitute for sour cream on a baked potato it works. I don't do fruit mixed in, but some granola for crunch is pretty good. Yoplait and other such concoctions are just sour milk with a ton of sugar. No live cultures and you might as well eat a chocolate donut.

Back when I was running regularly, I developed a taste for plain Greek yogurt. Sometimes I'd add a tablespoon of preserves or something, but at least I'd know exactly the calorie content. I won't eat regular yogurt anymore.

When I buy Greek yogurt it's plain and it's used as an ingredient in something else.

I eat a ton of it. It’s a great way to get easily digestible protein.

Different brands vary greatly in terms of thickness/density, and flavor. Locally, we have Ellenos, which I prefer. It’s the best I’ve tried. I’ve used it as a starter to make gallon batches of my own. In fact, I need to do it again soon.

I eat it plain, or add it to things, or things to it, depending. Tonight, I had some plain Greek Fage brand and added some whole pistachios and a little local honey. Was delicious. Other times, I’ll make a protein shake with milk, plain Greek yogurt, whey powder and whatever else goes. Recently got some peanut powder from Costco that I’m going to try blending in with it and see how it does. It’s been awhile, but I made a routine of making my own yogurt and tzatziki from it to keep as a dip, condiment, or sandwich spread.

Are you sure you didn’t eat plain yogurt instead of vanilla flavored? Plain yogurt is very sour. I like to use it in place of sour cream on baked potatoes.

If you don't want to use stevia to sweeten then try pure honey.

This sounds absolutely heavenly. I’m going to have to try this.

Like some of the others here, we occasionally use plain Greek yogurt as a sour cream substitute.

As far as more vile and disgusting than Greek yogurts… why yes, there is.

I brought some durian fruit to work for all to try. It is as disgusting as you have heard. It had the texture of a really thick and firm pudding, with strings like a pineapple in it. The smell is bad. The flavor, well it is like heavy cream, onions, a slight hint of diesel fuel. That’s about the best way to describe the flavor. But it is strong. The flavor is overwhelming. A small bite and the flavor explodes in your sinuses and coats your taste buds. It doesn’t go away easily.

So yes, there are things far worse than Greek yogurt. But I agree, Greek yogurt by itself is gross. Tastes like feta cheese to me.

You haven’t had it yet, but it’s vile and disgusting?

I have plain, whole milk, Greek yogurt several mornings/week. I put about a teaspoon of locally produced honey on it and a bit of cinnamon; i think it’s good.

When they fail to put the vanilla flavoring in vanilla greek yogurt then you're just eating plain Greek yogurt...
