The gravity in orbit isn't much less than at the surface. Centripetal force at orbital speed equals gravity at that distance, so the object neither falls nor rises.

But I'm not sure how this relates to time dilation wrt relativity.

I took a lot of physics in college, especially quantum mechanics and semiconductor physics. Likely 80% of what I learned is now obsolete, and most of the remaining 20% is only vaguely remembered.

Then again, NOTHING down in that quantum world really makes sense, does it? Razz

The way to look at it is that ALL subatomic particles are massless until the Higgs Boson (the so-called God Particle) connects some particles (not all) to the univeral Higgs Field. The Higgs Field is like syrup, and causes the particles to slow down to the point they can interact with each other and form atoms and molecules, the fundamental building blocks of our physical universe.

Without the Higgs Boson, all particles would be zipping around the universe at the speed of light and not interacting with each other. They would still exist, just not in a way that's "physical" as we're used to.

Wait 'till you guys find out that time is three dimensional!

Sabine says that's rubbish. I like Anton, but in this case my intuition says Sabine's correct.

Not that I understand the crazy math behind any of it.
