If you delete your current avatar from Imgur, even if you upload that file again, it will not write to the SF database. And since you cannot manually change the file name on Imgur, there is no way to make it work with the name contained in the db. The only recourse would be using one of the board avatars, or finding a hosting that the forum likes.

It's not the HTTP vs HTTPS.

I have a hosting server and control over it.
The "image hosting" application I run also creates "unique" filenames, but I also have the ability to put files directly in a directory and make that public, and those will not update either.

But other folks are hosting their own similar image services and those files have no trouble being used by SIGforum.

Others are putting their files on "public" image sites, similar to Photobucket, Imgur and the like, and some work, and some don't.


Without being able to "touch" the SIGforum server and the forum code (application, database, etc.) I cannot tell anyone why it is not working beyond knowing what I believe is going on, but it is speculation based on my knowledge and experience.

I believe Para has spent a good deal of time trying to solve it.

Best would be anyone that has either their own server/application for images who host and people can successfully change their avatars, or anyone who has been able to change their avatar on one of the "public" sites, will post that. Others can then see about using them.

Once a successful option is know, perhaps a single post explaining it can be put in the "sticky" in the office post "Attach Photos?" thread.


And to explain the reason behind sites randomly creating file names for images and not permitting people to change them on these "public offered gallery sites".

Exploits using image file names (and other file types publicly hosted) can be used to contain code/routines/commands etc. that once uploaded and be "called" by tying in the URL/filename and commands to "execute" them. Gaining access and elevating/escalating "privileges" on the hosting servers.

(there is a lot more, but it get's "geeky")

Kinda thought that if I changed mine I'd lose it, once the conversation moved forward.

Hopefully a solutions for Bill becomes available, I put it up so he could access it, but that seems to not be a viable option.

Orguss has a Display Email in his profile. Have you tried sending your avatar URL to him directly?

I know that I'm a pain in the ass, and I truly do not mean to be! There are not a lot of people that can put up with me for long, and my wife of 33 years will be the first to acknowledge that!
