We’re in the cheap seats on the Lake Huron side of the state. We’re close enough to Mackinaw City to see the boats in the Port Huron to Mackinac sailboat race go by on their way to Mackinac Island as well many of the downbound ships.

Thanks for the clarification, still a pretty area regardless when it's not winter.

We just booked another trip to Mackinac island for a conference my wife will attend in late July. Looking forward to it already.

Just now being reported, a fourth death attributed to the storm. A tree fell on a home in Stockbridge, southeast of Lansing Sunday night.

This gas station is at the south end of town where Old 27 crosses I-75. Gaylord has maybe a dozen plus gas stations and this is the only one open.

I think PIE&G underestimated their problem when they said be prepared for 5+ days without power. The 32,000 number hasn’t changed in 3 days and represents 80% of their customers and those customers are spread across several counties. I know they threw the “+” in, but I’m thinking 14+ would be more accurate.

Down here when a hurricane is coming, the power company has truck propositioned and ready to roll. They also have linemen and trucks from other states coming in. The power companies here know who to call and how to get it done based on past experience. Even then, a week without power isn’t unheard of. I’m not sure the power companies in Northern Michigan were/are ready for this. That functioning gas stations are in short supply doesn’t bode well for bringing in crews from other states.

I’m looking at plane tickets now. Those generators aren’t meant to run 14 days straight without service. Plus, if the water table isn’t up, the basements aren’t in danger of flooding, and I’ll save a ton on the gas bill shutting the generators down.

That one hits home for me. That man was a good friend and former co-worker. 56 years old, was planning for retirement in a few years. I heard that he had sat down to eat a nice steak and the tree got him. You never know.

Horrible tragedy for the family of the 3 children that were killed as well.

Looks like the punishment is continuing up North today. Rain/snow temps around freezing. Awful working conditions for the crews.

I'm still without power from the storm that came through the southwest portion of the lower peninsula on Sunday. I've never see a wall of wind and water moving that fast before. I live toward the north end of a 3 mile long lake. It came barreling down that long open channel and smacked the north end like a sledge hammer.

I feel bad for the folks up north. Compared to them, what we're experiencing isn't even close, other than those that lost loved ones...heartbreaking.

I just talked to my neighbor up there. He had to cut up six trees that were blocking his driveway to go back to Indiana yesterday. He said there’s no gas, no food, no services. I’ll head up there tomorrow, be there on Friday.

Changed my mind. One, the weather on the way up looks bad.

Two, part of my plan included taking the minivan down to the SIL's and flying back from Detroit. It just dawned on me that the minivan is in the big garage of which I boarded up the pedestrian door from the inside. The big garage is 500' from the houses and not tied into either whole house generator. I can't open the overhead door without electricity. That’ll be an easy fix. The meter is right outside the big garage and the electrical panel for the garage is also outside right next to the meter. I can easily run an inverter off my truck to power the garage door circuit.

Ice storms are not as frequent as hurricanes. All the power companies here have agreements that they will help each other out in the event of a storm. They even have planning meetings every year and a complicated plan for power restoration, ie hospitals and police stations first. Canada seems to get the bulk of the ice storms.
